ABSTRACT

This paper aims at understanding the challenges of the psychologist in the care of patients admitted to an emergency room in order to minimize the patients’ suffering produced by the psychological aspects of the illness. The illnes sprocess, as well as the hospitalization, is a factor difficult to be accepted by the subject. There were times during the training experience in the Emergency Room that there was no demand for psychological interventions, due to the unpredictability of the site. Therefore, it was decided to take steps to be carried out in the corridor, and in the medical and obstetric clinics. In the latter, expressive and fundamental interventions were developed with a patient, where one reflected on the importance of the subjective emergency work, psychological listening, and reception. Therefore, for the purpose of increasing knowledge and better understanding the ways the psychologist works in the hospital, we opted for this literature review. Thus, we understand the importance of psychologists in hospitals and especially how relevant is the work of a professional psychologist with these patients.
