ABSTRACT

Introduction: Injuries are a major global public health problem. There are very few community-based studies on childhood injury from India in this study, we identified the distribution and risk factors for fall-related child injuries in the Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nādu community. Methodology: A descriptive analysis was done among 710 children of age up to 14 years residing in the Kat-tankulathur region in Tamil Nādu. The appropriate number of samples were recruited using the cluster sam-pling method by dividing the subjects into separate clusters and from each cluster 40 samples were obtained. The information on fall-related injury was collected according to mechanism of ‘injury’ Results: The annual incidence of fall-related injuries was 9.1 %. About 72.3% of children had injuries at home and 36% of the persons had fractures in the upper limb. 42% of children had disability in their hands. The age, gender, education and type of family was significant to injury. Conclusion:Our study reported a higher incidence of Fall injuries in Tamil Nādu when compared other stud-ies done in India. Male children are the most common victims of injury and also identified homes, roads/streets as the most common places for the occurrences of fall injury in children.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Sickle disease is one of the oldest geneticdisorders of medical science. Sickle cell disease affectsmillions of people worldwide. The morbidity and mortalityassociated with the disease, complications and sicklecell crisis is a significant health issue. Hydroxyurea is ananticancer agent, which proved to be the wonder drug in lowerdoses in sickle cell disease. Objective: To evaluate the serumelectrolytes level in sickle disease patients and find out theeffect of hydroxyurea.Material and methods: Thirty sickle cell disease patientsand twenty normal individuals as controls are included in thestudy. 11 patients on hydroxyurea therapy and 19 are nonhydroxyurea therapy. The serum levels of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium and phosphate were estimatedin all the study subjects. Results: There is significant difference observed among TotalBilirubin, Urea, and Creatinine and chloride levels amongSickle disease patients compared with normal individuals. No much significant results were observed among patients onhydroxyurea therapy and non- hydroxy urea therapy exceptfor Total bilirubin and Sodium levels. Conclusion: Electrolytes plays crucial role in the pathphysiology of sickle cell disease, but hydroxyurea therapydoes not seem to alter the electrolyte levels in patients.

ABSTRACT

Two dogs of different age groups were presented with the history of oral growth, bleeding, excessive salivation, bad breath, inappetance and dysphagia. Physical examination revealed cauliflower like reddish growth in the gingiva enclosing the mandibular incisiors and canine tooth. Haematology and serum biochemical profiles were within the normal range. Plain radiography revealed extensive growth involving the lower mandible and gingiva. Hence rostral mandibulectomy was performed to excise the tumor mass. The dogs recovered uneventfully after surgery with no difficulty in feeding liquid and semisolid diet. The post operative prognosis for dogs with oral neoplasia depends on type of tumor and extent of disease at the time of surgery. In the above two cases the tumors were benign and rostral mandibulectomy provided excellent prognosis and recovery with no recurrence of tumor

ABSTRACT

Atrial fibrillation secondary to long-standing mitral valve disease is very common. The maze procedure carried out along with mitral valve surgery reverts many of these patients back to sinus rhythm. Using radiofrequency ablation to carry out the maze procedure during mitral valve surgery gives results comparable to those from the Cox surgical maze procedure. We present our experience with 3 patients of rheumatic mitral valvular disease in whom radiofrequency ablation was used for the maze procedure.
