ABSTRACT

Between 1987-1992 thirty three patients of stage lll and lV squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck were randomised into two groups, group I comprised of 18 patients and received cisplatinum and 5 fluorouracil as neoadjuvant infusion chemotherapy. Group II had 15 patients and received bleomycin, cisplatinum and 5 flurouracil as neoadjuvant infusion chemotherapy. The total response rates in both the groups were similar: group I: 83.3% and group II: 86.6%. Patients in GpII tend to achieve a response with only two cycles of chemotherapy. The addition of bleomycin in regime II probably helps to reduce the number of chemotherapy cycles from three to two to achieve a complete partial response. The toxixcity of both these regimens is mild and clinically acceptable
