ABSTRACT

The case mentioned may be an example of an infection due to B. alcaligenes fecalis. The organism isolated was studied and found to be "consistent with Bacterium alcaligenes fecalis" although this organism is rarely a causative agent of infectionWhile the lymphatic enlargement may have contributed to the clinical condition, the toxic symptoms and fever shows that the process comes from the contaminating bacilli in the circulating blood. ABSTRACT

1. The results of this investigation would indicate that the total alkaloids of Alstonia macrophylla possesses a moderate hypotensive activity which is similar to that produced by the alkaloids of Rauwolfia, although other activities are not the same2. These hypotensive activities observed in the experimental animals show a possibility of a potent drug to lower the blood pressure of individuals with pertension3. The cardiovascular effects as shown in the electrocardiographs do not seem to be the main effect or activity of the drug on oral administration although it caused reversal of certain ECG tracings back to normal4. Further studies currently under way are designed to find out the mechanism of the hypotensive activity. The potentialities of the alkaloids may pave a way for a new anti-hypertensive from a local plant. (Comments)
