ABSTRACT

Background: The altered spectrum of diseases in geriatric age group and atypical manifestations of these conditions make geriatric health care truly unique. The challenge ahead for health care in the coming years is to ensure the quality of life to a large group of the elderly population. In spite of the recognition that the elderly has specific medical conditions, a dedicated health care policy to improve geriatric health care is yet to be developed India. Objectives: To study the disease pattern, hospital stay and outcome among the geriatric patients based on age, gender and other variables. Materials and methods: An observational prospective study done after permission of human research ethics committee. All patients aged 60 years and over admitted to the wards were included into the study. Detailed information about current admission and other history was noted. Thorough clinical evaluation was done by physical examination and investigations and noted in the case record form. Observations: Total 100 participants included in the study. They were divided into two groups 60-64 years and ? 65 years. Nearly 90% patients had more than one aliments or diagnosis. Non-communicable diseases like Cardiovascular disease (48%) was the commonest reason for admission, followed by Respiratory disease (42%), renal disease (40%), gastrointestinal disease, neurological disease and endocrine disease in descending order of frequency. Conclusion: Non-communicable diseases are common cause of morbidity and mortality with infection are adding the morbidity as well as mortality among the elder population.

ABSTRACT

Background: A school is a key location for educating adolescents about health, hygiene and nutrition. Adolescence is period of critical development and transition. These changes have important implications for health. Aims and objectives of the stud was to study the role of WHR in nutritional assessment in adolescent school children and compare it with BMI as an assessment tool and to study nutritional status of municipal and private school. Methods: It was a cross sectional study conducted in 10-17-year-old school children in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. There were 2 private and 2 municipal schools selected randomly by purposive sampling. Child absent or not well on the day of study were excluded. Results: Incidence of obesity is 42.9% and 57.1% in municipal and private school respectively. Incidence of overweight is 47.2% and 52.8% in municipal and private schools respectively. (2.9%) adolescents had BMI range of 25-29.9 which is considered to be overweight. However, the percentage of overweight and obese was raised at 28% and 23.5% respectively when classified as per WHR.Conclusions: The difference between incidence of overweight and obesity in private and municipal schools were not statistically significant. A combination of increase BMI with increase WHR is a stronger indicator of increase health risk.

ABSTRACT

Background: Study of the clinical profile and no. of admissions of adolescents admitted in pediatric ward and other than Pediatric ward. Methods: A Prospective Study, conducted during August 2018 to March 2019, at a tertiary care teaching hospital, including age group 10-19 years. Results: Out of 1645, highest adolescents' admissions'' 749 (46.37%) were to medical ward, 2nd highest in the Pediatric ward which was 317 (19.6%), followed by general surgical ward which was 312(19.3%).'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Highest among late adolescents, infectious diseases were still the leading cause of hospitalization of adolescents as it constituted 68.4% (902) of admissions to other than pediatric ward followed by surgical cause[135(10.2%)] followed by accidents [5%(66)].Conclusions: Infectious diseases are more common in adolescents compared to developed countries. The shift in hospitalisation of adolescents from pediatrics to general medicine at about 14 years is illustrated in present study and reflects the need of better implementation of clinical policy on the age divide.

ABSTRACT

Background: Immunological and inflammatory mechanisms, which may play a role in a number of disorders like rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Ancient ayurvedic physicians had developed certain dietary and therapeutic measures to arrest or prevent these disorders. Objective: Rheuma off gold (RG) is a herbomineral formulation recommended by ayurvedic medical practitioners for treatment of RA. This study was carried out to lend scientific evidence to the efficacy claim for RG in the management of RA in folklore medicine. Materials and Methods: Arthritis was induced by complete Freund’s adjuvant. Treatment with formulation 100 mg/kg and dexamethasone 2 mg/kg was given to rats intragastrically once a day from day 1 to day 21 and after which estimation of physical, biochemical, and hematological parameters were carried out. Results: Treatment of formulation to adjuvant induced arthritic animal showed statistically significant (P < 0.05) improvement in physical parameters like arthritic index, paw edema, paw thickness as well as reduction of inflammatory markers like C‑reactive protein, serum rheumatoid factor, erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The treatment also produced statistically significant (P < 0.05) increase in hemoglobin percent and improvement in splenomegaly and thymus index. In the histopathological examination, ameliorative effect of formulation was observed in hyperplasia of synovium, pannus formation, and destruction of the joint space. Conclusion: The results obtained in experiments indicated that the formulation significantly inhibited the adjuvant‑induced arthritis which was comparable to dexamethasone and had preferable anti‑inflammatory effect without significant side effect. Thus, the formulation may be a potential preventive or therapeutic candidate for the treatment of chronic inflammation and arthritis.
