ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: to obtain reference values for behavioral observation protocol on the development of communicative and symbolic schemes of children with typical language development. METHOD: it has been evaluated 44 children between 24 and 47 months, both genders, selected from three different primary schools using Denver II development screening methodology and also a questionnaire submitted to the parents. All children were filmed 30 minutes interacting with the researcher and playing with toys. The recordings were analyzed through behavioral observation protocol. The values that compose the statistical analysis are average, median, maximums and minimums. It has been used the T Student test to compare the ages. RESULTS: in regards to communication abilities, children had shown an evolution with age (average of three and two years old respectively 58.12 and 51.44), even though no significant statistical change was found in the range of ages compared (p=0.486). In regards do verbal comprehension, children aged three presented better results than children aged two (averages: 59.41 and 50.70 respectively) with statistical significance variance (p=0.0000020). In cognitive development, three years old children presented better performance compared to two years old children (averages: 44.53 and 31.96 respectively), significant difference between results (p=0.00364) showing that children evolve in the hierarchy of symbolism. CONCLUSION: the values obtained in PROC combined qualitative and quantitative analysis, contributing, besides diagnosis, to a more objective therapeutic process evaluation.

ABSTRACT

Unilateral hearing loss represents great risk to academic backwardness, communication, social development, and also to auditory processing. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the auditory abilities of localization, closing, figure-ground, temporal resolution, and simple temporal ordering in a male 17-year-old individual diagnosed with profound unilateral sensorineural hearing loss of idiopathic etiology, without other alterations. The evaluation process consisted on the application of a checklist, and the conduction of conventional clinical audiological evaluation (pure-tone audiometry, logoaudiometry, and tympanometry), and of monotic (ipsilateral SSI, Filtered speech test) and diotic (Sound localization, Auditory memory for verbal and non-verbal sounds, AFT-R) auditory processing test. Results showed alteration only in the sound localization test. No complaints were reported regarding the abilities of sound localization, attention, discrimination, and comprehension. In this case study, the profound unilateral sensorineural hearing loss did not seem to restrict the development of the auditory processing abilities evaluated, except for the localization of the sound source.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to describe the Guillan-Barré sundrome development and speech and language pathology manifestations. It describe the clinical picture of a speech and language pathology, and the reavaliation 7 months after the symptoms benning, through formal and informal tests applications and auditory evaluation. In the revaluation, the results showed intentional communication, primary functions, restricted participation in dialogic activity, isolated words productions, orders...

ABSTRACT

Some studies have shown a relationship between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and dysphonia, as well as quality of life in oral health. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between severity of vocal self-perception and TMD severity and the correlation between oral health-related quality of life impairment and TMD severity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-three women aged 20 to 40 years, with or without complaint of dysphonia, were recruited at the Bauru campus of the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and the local community. All participants were subjected to an investigation of quality of life related to dental and speech aspects by the application of Oral Health Impact Profile-short form (OHIP-14) and the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) protocol. Also, a questionnaire was applied to detect the presence and severity of TMD. RESULTS: There was significant correlation between TMD and quality of life for all aspects analyzed in the oral health protocol, except for function and physical limitation (p>0.05). There was negative correlation between TMD and voice-related quality of life in the total score (p=0.007) as weel as physical (p=0.008) and socio-emotional aspects (p=0.017). In addition, there was statistically significant correlation between TMD and vocal self-perception (p=0.037). CONCLUSION: There is an association between TMD severity, voice-related and oral health-related quality of life. It is important to investigate in future studies the vocal self perception as well as the oral and voice conditions in patients with TMD.
