ABSTRACT

The purpose of this quasi experimental study was the comparison between the efficiency of tape recording instruction, produced by the team, with the routine one in the renal stone patients undergoing the pre-surgery and the post-one. The instruction, had pre and post surgery self practice, self physical exercises for rehabilitation and prevention from post-operative complications. 64 renal stone patients admitted at surgical ward, Mahidol Bampen II Building, Siriraj Hospital, were divided into two groups equally, included control group (CG) and target group (TG). The CG was instructed about the content above by routine ward method. Each of TG was instructed about the same content by tape recording cassette, given at the first time of the ward admission. The collected data was hospilization duration, pre and post operative stress rating scale, post operative complications and level of ability in physical rehabilitation evaluated from daily records. T-test and X2–test were used for analyzing and comparing the efficiency on CG ant TG. The results showed that 1) the post-operative duration of both groups were insignificantly different at level 0.05 (t-test p>0.05). 2) The level of stress of patients in each group decreased in the same direction, with in insignificantly different between these two group at the level 0.05 (t-test p>0.05). 3) TG was able to obtain self-care practices, earlier than CG, especially at higher frequency of the 4 self-prafices, sitting up on bed, ditting up with floating legs on bed rim, sitting up on the chair given at the bed side and walking around the bed, besides of the four ones there were insignificantly difference (X2–test p<0.05). 4) TG has the ability of physical rehabilitation better than CG significantly at level 0.05 (t-test p<0.05). 5) Both groups have the same kinds of post-operative complications but differ in period of time distinctly of 2 complications, constipation and weakness of extremities (X2–test p<0.05).

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to test the effects of perineal exercises on ability to control urination; i.e., continence of urine in patients undergoing suprapubic transvesical prostatectomy or transurethral prostatectomy. The study was conducted in surgical ward Mahidol Bampen 2, Siriraj Hospital. The quasi-experimental design was used as the method of procedure. The 30 subjects were equally assigned into one control and one experimental group. The experimental group patients received an extra treatment; i.e., systemically organized nursing instructions on period exercises for both pre and post operative phases. The control group patients received no extra treatment, only what was routinely provided in the ward. A Patient Continence Status Checklist (PCSC) was specially designed for this study. It uses a nominal scale to evaluate patients at their first voiding after the removal of urethral catheter or suprapubic cystostomy tube. It was found that the number of continent patients were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group (p<.01). This indicated that the experimental group patients showed higher ability to control urination than the control group patients.
