ABSTRACT

Objective. To describe the participants of the “Intensive Assistance to Smokers” municipal program control for smoking habit in Goiania during 2006 and identify the food consumption profile. Method. A cross-sectional study was carried out among 140 smoker’s adults. Participants were interviewed about social-economic characteristics and smoking habit. Food consumption was investigated using a food frequency questionnaire retrospective to the last six months. Statistical analysis was performed using Excel program 2003 and SPSS 8.0. The accurate Fisher test; t Student test; and Pearson correlation coefficient were used in the analysis of the data. Results. The studied group was composed for 107 (76.4%) women and 33 (23.6%) men. More than 85% of the studied population smoked for more than 20 years. The starting age of smoking was in the range 7-14 years old. The most frequently consumed food which defined the pattern in each one were: vegetal oil, salt, rice, coffee, beans, beef, sugar, tomato, white bread, whole milk, banana, apple, industrial fruit juice with sugar, and beer among alcoholic beverages. The participants were in accordance to the daily recommendations for carbohydrates and proteins, and exceeded for lipids, 97% (men) and 90.7% (women) exceeded daily amount of sodium. Conclusion. We could verify that the food profile of smoking participants showed poor variability of food consumption with high intake of fat among men and high intake of coffee and salt among both sex. It is necessary more studies to relate the food consumption with the smoking habit in order to plan strategies of solution for the detected problems.
