ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND:In recent years, the spinal internal fixation technology has made rapid development based on biomechanics and material sciences. OBJECTIVE: To review the biomechanical characteristics of the lumbosacral spine and the application of various internal fixation materials in the reconstruction of spinal stability after lumbosacral spinal tuberculosis. METHODS:A computer-based search of Medline and Chinese Journal Ful-Text Database was performed for relevant articles using the keyword of “lumbosacral spinal tuberculosis, biomaterials materials, fixation” in English and Chinese, respectively. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Rigid internal fixation is a conventional treatment for lumbosacral tuberculosis, which improves the spinal alignment and stability during the spinal reconstruction. Metalic materials such as stainless steel, titanium and titanium aloys have been widely used in rigid internal fixation, but metal sedimentation, non-transparency, stress shielding and osteoporosis after internal fixation impact the fusion effects and imaging observation. Absorbable materials as newly-developing materials have good biocompatibility and biodegradability in orthopedic internal fixation. To select the appropriate material for internal fixation, the biomechanical properties of internal fixation materials wil be investigated according to the degree of vertebral damage and lumbosacral stability.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the relationship between femur and serum calcium and phosphorus content in rat with osteoporosis. Methods We developed animal models with rat experienced bilateral oophorectomy and used inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) to determine calcium and phosphorus content in femur and serum of experimental group as well as control group. Results Calcium and phosphorus contents in femur in experimental group were significantly lower than that in control group[Ca: (218.59 ± 10.43) mg/L vs (253.32 ±7.54)mg/L;P:( 127.82 ±3.71 )mg/L vs ( 142. 18 ±5.99 ) mg/L, P <0. 01], but in serum experimental group it was significantly higher than that in control group [Ca: (99.45 ±0.76)mg/L vs (97.56±0.80) mg/L;P: (67.68 ± 1.63) mg/L vs (60.00 ± 1.18) mg/L,P <0. 01]. Conclusion Femur calcium and phosphorus levels were significantly reduced, which was related to the increase of serum calcium and phosphorus content, and it was one of the causes of osteoporosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the clinical character and treatment method of the coexistence of cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis.Method Twenty-seven cases with coexistence of cervical and lum bar spinal stenosis,9 cases with single cervical operation,7 cases with single lumbar operation,11 combined cervical and lumbar operation. Results Twenty-two cases were followed-up,average 49 months, all eases were recorded with JOA score.JOA score was(8.6±0.2)scores preoperafion,(11.7±0.3)scores 2 weeks postoperation,(13.1±0.2)scores 3 months postoperation,(13.5±0.2)scores 6 months postoperation,(13.9±0.3)scores 12 months postoperation.Relief rate was 79.2%,satisfactory rate was 93.8%.Conclusions The patient with multi-segment spinal stenosis should be treated individually,to certain responsible focus. If no responsible focus,it is better to treat with cervical spinal operation first.
