ABSTRACT

There is a tight regulatory network between the skeletal muscle system and the immune system, and they are jointly involved in functional regulation and response of the skeletal muscle system and the immune system. Cytokines are important signaling molecules that constitute this regulatory network. The cytokines produced by skeletal muscle atrophy and the cytokines produced by mechanical stimulation of skeletal muscle have different compositions and biological effects. The normal immune system and abnormal immune function can also affect skeletal muscle through the synergistic effect of different cytokines. According to this, a complex regulatory network between the two major systems is formed. The cytokine-mediated regulatory network between the skeletal muscle system and the immune system was reviewed in order to provide the theoretical basis for prevention and treatment of the skeletal muscle atrophy and mechanical intervention of the body immune function.

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare extravascular lung water index (EVLWI) and oxygenation index (PaO2/FiO2) in estimation of acute lung injury(ALI) .Methods Sixteen patients with post traumatic ALI (within 48 h) of both sexes, aged 18-80 yr, were studied. The patients were mechanically ventilated. Right internal jugular vein and femoral artery were catheterized and connected to PiCCO monitor (IntelliVue MP50, Philips, Netherlands).EVLWI was monitored with the PiCCO system. PaO2 was determined every 24 h. ALI was diagnosed based on the following criteria:(1)PaO2/FiO2≤300 mm Hg; (2)X-ray chest film-patchy shadows in the bilateral lungs and (3) CVP≤12 mm Hg.Lung injury score(LIS) was recorded. The patients were divided into PaO2/FiO2≤ 300 group and ≤200 group and EVLWI ≥ 10 group and < 10 group. Results There was no significant difference in LIS between PaO2/FiO2 ≤300 group and PaO2/FiO2 ≤200 group at 24 and 48 h of PiCCO monitoring. At 72 h of PiCCO monitoring LIS was significantly increased in PaO2/FiO2 ≤200 group as compared with PaO2/FiO2 ≤300 group, LIS was significantly higher in EVLWI≥ 10 group than in EVLWI < 10 group at 24, 48 and 72 h of PiCCO monitoring. Conclusion EVLWI is more accurate than PaO2 /FiO2 in estimation of severity of ALI.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the effect of tail-suspending on myostatin(MSTN)expression in the soleus muscle of rats. Methods The MSTN mRNA levels in soleus muscle of tail-suspended and normal control rats were measured and compared. Results The MSTN mRNA in soleus muscle of tail-suspended rats was 2.2 times(hind limb unloading for 14 days)and 3.5 times(hind limb unloading for 30 days) higher than that in normal control rats (P<0.05).The relative wet weight of the soleus muscle in tail-suspended rats was decreased by 11%(unloading 14 days)and 1 9%(unloading 30 days),respectively, compared with that in normal control rats. Conclusion The expression of MSTN mRNA is elevated in the soleus muscle of tail-suspended rats, probably due to atrophy of the soleus muscle.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the clinical value of cerebrospinal fluid cytology(csfc)and specific stain in tuberculous meningitis(TBM)-purulent meningitis(PM)and cryptococcal meningitis(CM).Methods The csfc data of 179 patients with TBM,PM and CM were retrospectively analyzed. The samples collected from all of these patients were analyzed by csfc May-Grunwald-Giemsa(MGG)staining,aricine blue staining and Indian ink staining. And the cytospin smears from 70 TBM were simultaneously stained by the immunofluorescence(IF)and immunocytological method to demonstrate the presence of mycobacterial antigen. Results ①TBM group showed a mixed-cell response. At the early stage of disease, the proportion of neutrophilic granulocyte reached 80%,and then reduced gradually.Lyumphoidocyte reaction was the most obvious in 1~2 months. The immunofluorescence(IF)and immunocytological method present a sensitivity of 82.9%and 85.7%,respectively.②Neutrophilic granulocyte was the most cell at acute stage of PM,and it descended quickly once treated with effective antibiotics.③The positive rates to detect CM with csfc MGG,aricine and Indian ink staining were 83.3%,81.8%,and 76.5%,respectively.Conclusion Dynamic observation on cerebrospinal fluid cytology is helpful to boost the differential diagnosis of intracranial infection.
