ABSTRACT

Background : Meliodosis is an infection by Burkholderia Pseudomallei, is now endemic in India. It can have varied clinical manifestations. We report a case of Meliodosis in a diabetic patient presented as multiple Splenic Abcesses. Case Report : A 56-year-old male patient, manual labour, diabetic with uncontrolled glycemic levels presented with prolonged Fever and abdominal pain which on evaluation revealed multiple Splenic Abscesses. Culture of aspirate from abscess grew Burkholderia Pseudomallei. He improved with appropriate antibiotic therapy and Splenectomy. Conclusion : The case is presented to highlight the importance of making early clinical and microbiological diagnosis for a better outcome

ABSTRACT

The study aims to find out the association between socio-economic status (SES) of the family and emotional competence (EC) of secondary school students by taking the construct as a whole and in terms of of its component factors. The cross- sectional study collected data from a stratified random sample of 866 students from the secondary schools of Ernakulam and Thrissur districts (Kerala, India), representing the population of adolescents in the age range 13-15, studying in the secondary classes (Std. VIII to X) of schools affiliated to the Board of Public Examinations, Govt. of Kerala. Data were collected by administering the Emotional Competence Scale for Secondary School Pupils (Rekha & Salim Kumar, 2015) and the Socio-Economic Status Scale (Usha & Vijayan, 2014). Chi-square test of association was employed to analyse the data inferentially. The result revealed the presence of significant association between SES of the family and emotional competence in total and two of the constituent factors of EC, viz., self-awareness and relationship management

ABSTRACT

Background: 85, adult patients aged between 17 to 65 years of both sexes were studied with to know the etiology of suicidal ideation.Methods: Applying methodical instruments like sleep habits questionnaires and Black scale for suicidal ideation to rule out etiology and types of suicidal ideation.Results: Total 13(15.2%) had active suicidal ideation, 23(27%) specific plans for suicide 20(23.5%) had passive suicidal ideation, 29(34%) patients had previous history of suicidal attempts. Majority of the patients were under treatment of hypnotics and antidepressants�, 11(12.9%) were on clonozepine 12(14.1%) were on lorazepam 9(10.5%) were on chlordiazepoxide, Antidepressants, 8(9.41%) were on sertalin, 14(16.4%) desvenlafaxine, 15(17.6%) Amitriptyline, 16(18.8%) were on duloxetine.Conclusions: This pragmatic study highlights the suicidal ideation with sleep disorders and depression, will be quite helpful to psychiatrist, psycho-social worker to treat the patients efficiently

ABSTRACT

Background: To evaluate the various causes of suicides and mental illness of different age groups which enables the patients to commit suicide in both sexes.Methods: The data of suicides was collected from medical records of the different Hospital in Mangalore region of South Karnataka.Results: Total 32 cases of suicides in adults were studied at Mangalore city and district as a whole. The history of suicide was 6(18.7%) was alcoholic, 4(12.5%) were drug addicted (dependent), 5(15.6%) were HIV infected, 3(9.37%) had infertility 4(12.5%) had loss of job, 2(6.25%) had sudden loss of property, 8(25%) had failure in love affair. The clinical manifestations of suicides were (8.25%) had major depression 5(15.6%) had multiple personality disorder. 11(34.3%) were schizophrenic, 6(18.7%) had mood disorders, 2(6.25%) were epileptic.Conclusions: This study of suicides of young adults will be quite helpful to psychiatrist and medico-social workers to take preventive measures to prevents such suicides because suicide is not only social problem, but it is due to abnormal mental state too.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory disease of brain, optic nerve and spinal cord mediated by immune system. In India, MS prevalence has increased from1.33/10, 0000 to 8.35/100,000. People are most diagnosed at age 20-50 years with an average age of 30. People with MS frequently reports balance and walking impairments. Therefore it is necessary to improve balance in MS .In recent advance it is shown that exergaming and CoDuSe exercise have positive roll to improve balance in patient with Multiple sclerosis. Thus aim of this study is to compare the effect of CoDuSe exercise and Exergaming program, on Balance performance & balance confidence, in People with multiple sclerosis. Methods: A comparitive study was done on 30 Multiple Sclerosis patients, selected by purposive sampling technique and those meeting inclusion criteria were divided into 2 groups, Group A and Group B. Baseline balance assessment was taken in both the groups by Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Group A (n= 15) underwent CoDuSe exercise &Group B (n=15) underwent Exergaming protocols respectively for 6 weeks. Post intervention balance assessment was obtained at the end of 6weeks using BBS. Results thus obtained were statistically analysed using SPSS 16.0, MS Word and MS Excel. Results: Group A who were given CoDuSe intervention improved much better than Group B who were given Exergaming .The unpaired t-test was performed between the two groups which showed moderately statistical significance with p-value <0.001. Conclusion: In conclusion, CoDuSe is more effective than Exergaming exercise to improve balance in people with Multiple Sclerosis.
