ABSTRACT

The results of the experiments indicate that the potency of the new anti-rabies vaccine made locally exceeds the minimum requirement of 1,000 M.L.D. protection. The salvaged vaccines, both human and veterinary, which were produced from an old seed the efficacy of which might have been spoiled by the lack of refrigeration as well as by age, showed a very low protection of 23.5 M.L.D. and 69.8 M.L.D. respectively. Which of the two factors played the greater role can not be determined. (Conclusions)

ABSTRACT

A method for determining circulating free thyroid hormone using Sephadex gel filtration is described. It differentiates clearly the euthyroid from the hyperthyroid states. Its most useful clinical application is in the diagnosis of clinically hyperthroid states with normal protein-bound iodine and radioactive iodine uptake. (Summary)

ABSTRACT

A case of a 31 yr old Filipino housewife who was bitten by a mad dog is reported. No anti-rabies vaccine injection was given because the subject was pregnant. The patient was then referred to the San Lazaro Hospital in Manila due to symptoms of hydrophobia, aerophobia, and photophobiaSamples of the patients saliva were taken and 6 cc of blood was obtained for laboratory tests. Cesarian section was successfully done and a 7 lb baby boy was delivered but the hydrophobic mother died 10 hr after the operation. Laboratory results showed a 100% survival rate on mice injected intraperitoneally of patients blood. However, four out of five mice died of rabies when saliva mixed with saline solution was injected intracerebrallyThe case showed that pregnancy should not deter the necessary antirabies injections specially if the biting animal is known to be rabid. Also, a viable fetus in the uterus of a mother dying from hydrophobia can be saved by cesarian section

ABSTRACT

1. This method for determining the 2- and 4-double bond fatty acid content in the blood serum is based on ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy of the isolated fatty acid2. The method is limited only to the determination of polyunsaturated fatty acids, due to the small amount of lipid fatty acids represented in the small amount of blood sample used3. The validity of the procedure has been tested by addition of certain amount of standards under assay to the unknown serum and the mixture analyzed to see how much of the material added is recovered4. Freeze-drying method had been introduced in the procedure to save time in connection with the evaporation of extract to dryness and prevent oxidation of the fatty acids. (Summary)
