ABSTRACT
Twenty-two biopsy specimens of salivary gland tumors were examined immunohistochemically for S-100 protein localization. These included nine pleomorphic adenomas, four adenolymphomas, one basal cell adenoma, five mucoepidermoid carcinomas, two adenoid cystic carcinomas and one acinic cell carcinoma. S-100 protein was found in myoepithelial cells and cells in myxoid and chondroid areas in pleomorphic adenomas. In adenolymphomas, mucoepidermoid carcinomas and adenoid cystic carcinoma cases, No S-100 activity was present either in the epithelial component or in the stroma of these specimens. So, it was demonstrated from this study that myoepithelial cells play a major role in the histogenesis of salivary gland tumors, especially pleomorphic adenomas
