ABSTRACT

Middle meatal packing is necessary following endoscopic sinus surgery [ESS] in order to control bleeding, as a stent to prevent lateralization of the middle turbinate, and as a sealant to control accumulation of mucous or blood within the ethmoidal cavity. Various forms of middle meatal packs [MMP] have been used whether absorbable or non-absorbable. This study was conducted upon a series of patients who have undergone ESS by the authors at the Hearing and Speech Institute and EL-Sahel Teaching Hospital in the period between December 2002 and December 2004. Different forms of MMP were used as Gelfoam, Rapid-Rhino, Bio-tulle [Su-fratulle], Surgicel as absorbable packs and Merocel as nonabsorba-ble packs. The aim of this study is to discuss the rationale for selection of these products

ABSTRACT

Forty patients with chronic tension-type headache associated with disorder of the pericranial muscles were selected and divided into two groups [20 patients each]. One group was given medical treatment in the form of analgesic and muscle relaxant combination plus an antidepressant and the other group was given soft laser therapy on the trigger and/or tender points. The different theories for the causes of tension-type headache and the different modalities of treatment were discussed. The results of using soft laser therapy as a single modality treatment were equivocal if not superior to medical treatment without the inevitable side effects of drug intake for a long period. The tension-type headache should not be ignored, as it is a very common type of headache presenting in the ENT territory taking into consideration the different modalities of treatment that should be considered, using the soft laser therapy as an effective, cost- effective and safe modality of treatment
