ABSTRACT

We investigated the effect of caffeine ingestion combined with a 2-wk sprint interval training (SIT) on training-induced reductions in body adiposity. Twenty physically-active men ingested either 5 mg/kg of cellulose as a placebo (PLA, n=10) or 5 mg/kg of caffeine (CAF, n=10) 60 min before each SIT session (13×30 s sprint/15 s of rest). Body mass and skinfold thickness were measured pre- and post-training. Energy expenditure was measured at rest, during exercise, and 45 min after exercise in the first SIT session. Body fat was similar between PLA and CAF groups at pre-training (P>0.05). However, there was a significant decrease in body fat after training in the CAF group (−5.9±4.2%, P<0.05) but not in PLA (1.5±8.0%, P>0.05). There was no difference in energy expenditure at rest and during exercise between PLA and CAF groups (P>0.05), but the post-exercise energy expenditure was 18.3±21.4% greater in the CAF than in the PLA group (P<0.05). In conclusion, caffeine ingestion before SIT sessions induced a body fat loss that may be associated with higher post-exercise energy expenditure.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Background: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Latin America is not well known. Aim: To study the real prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and its associated risk factors in the VII region of Chile. Material and Methods: A probabilistic sample of 1,325 subjects over the age of 20, stratified by age and differentiated by place of residence was studied. The criteria of the World Panel of Experts convened by the World Health Organization in 1997, was used to define the presence of diabetes (two fasting blood glucose values over 126 mg/dl or a blood glucose over 200 mg/dl, 2 hours after a 75 g carbohydrate oral load). Results: The global prevalence estimated for DM in this population was 5.39 percent. The calculated prevalence in subjects between 20 and 44 years was 1.88 percent (CI 0.39-3.37); between 45 and 64 years, 10.75 percent (CI 8.35-13.14); 65 years or older 11.30 percent (CI 8.00-14.60), p <0.05. The prevalence was 5.8 percent in urban areas and 4.5 percent in rural areas. Forty five percent of diabetics were not aware of their condition. Forty eight percent of diabetics and 31 percent of non diabetics were hypertensive (p <0.01), whereas 47.8 percent of diabetics and 24.6 percent of non diabetics had at least one diabetic parent (p <0.01). Smoking was less frequent in diabetics than in non diabetics (15.7 and 24.3 percent respectively, p <0.05). Ninety percent of both diabetics and non diabetics were sedentary. Discussion: Health care systems require an epidemiological monitoring system to provide information about the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and to control the evolution of patients

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The morphological and cytochemical changes undergone by the oocyte during progesterone-induced nuclear maturation were analyzed in fully grown follicle oocytes of Bufo arenarum during the breeding period. The distribution and the staining properties of the nuclear material and of the perinuclear cytoplasm were studied. Our observations indicate that, during this complex process, the germinal vesicle (GV) undergoes migration and dissolution. The nuclear sap, which in the control has an homogeneous aspect, during maturation adopts a fibrillar appearance in the basal zone, showing basophilia and positive reaction to PAS, Feulgen and Methyl green-Pyronin staining. When the GV breakdown occurs, the nuclear contents become mixed with the cortical cytoplasm, developing a different cytoplasmic mass that disappears about 12 h after the beginning of incubation. The perinuclear cytoplasm exhibits metachromasia and orthochromasia with Toluidine Blue at pH 5.6 and a strong basophilia with PAS, suggesting the existence of acid compounds. The presence of nucleic acids such as RNA and DNA is a strong possibility because of the positive reaction to Methyl green-Pyronin, Feulgen and DAPI. This cytoplasmic mass remains until the end of the meiotic resumption process
