To establish coordinated changes between the manner ofteaching and of providing care, the Ministry of Healthlaunched the Health Work Education Program, and theMarilia Medical School (Famema) was given nine proposalsfor Family Health, two of them for Health Surveillanceand one for Mental Health. Using documentary analysisas well as qualitative and quantitative research, our intentwas to verify both the results obtained and the perceptionof the individuals involved in this process. In terms ofthe aims of the Unified Health System, the results showadvances in professional training and qualification for suchwork, in preparing to work in groups and with groups, and toward using the scientific method in daily practice. However, management and services organization, and non-committed members were pointed out asweaknesses, plus the need to advance on the developmentof community actions and their institutionalization. Inthis way, the Health Work Education Program contributesto a new perspective on professional training and healthcare practice, although expansion and consolidation ofguidelines are required to tread a differentiated path.

ABSTRACT

Neurocysticercosis is a frequent cause of epilepsy and other neurologic abnormalities in all age groups, however by virtue of its prolonged incubation period as well as young children's nutritional habits, it is rarely seen in preschool-age children. The objective of this study is to report the case of a 2 1/2 year-old child who presented with new-onset seizures. Her diagnostic features, including neuroradiologic findings, are described and compared with the literature. No matter how young he or she may be, every child who presents with new-onset seizures or other unexplained neurologic features and whose CT or MRI shows cystic lesions or contrast-enhancing rounded lesions should raise a suspicion of neurocysticercosis
