ABSTRACT

Objective: To assess the level of knowledge and awareness regarding hepatitis B and C among women attending obstetrics and gynaecology clinic at Baqai University hospital Nazimabad


Study design: Descriptive cross sectional study


Place and duration: Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic at Baqai University Hospital Nazimabad Karachi from 10th March to 9th June 2011


Methodology: A total 151 women of 15 - 50 years of age who visited the out patient Department were selected for the study. Women who were Hepatitis B and C positive were excluded from study. Informations was collected on pre-designed questionnaire containing question regarding basic knowledge of disease, high risk group, modes of transmission and its prevention


Results: Out of total 151 women 75 [49.6 %] knew that Hepatitis B and C are the viral infection of liver. 82 [54.3 %] knew about transmission via sexual intercourse and 122 [80.7 %] knew about infected blood transfusion. Regarding high risk group 99[65.5%] knew about multiple sexual partners. Only 83[54.9%] women mentioned about vaccine against Hepatitis B and 78[51.6%] knew about the available treatment


Conclusion: The knowledge about Hepatitis B and C among women was inadequate and still needs improvement in order to prevent its spread rapidly

ABSTRACT

To find out the frequency of obesity and insulin resistance among infertile women with polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS]. Descriptive case series. Baqai Institute of Reproduction and Developmental Sciences [BIRDS], from July 2012 to June 2013. Women who had PCOS were selected on the basis of Rotterdam criteria between the ages of 16 to 40 years. Detailed history, physical examination, transvaginal ultrasound and hormone profile were done. Women who had other endocrinological problems like thyroid disorder, hyperprolactinemia, diabetes mellitus, Cushing syndrome and androgens producing tumours were excluded from the study. A total of 318 [35.49%] infertile women were diagnosed as PCOS out of 896 women who visited BIRDS during the study period. Majority [n=178 - 55.97%] of the women were between 21-30 years of age. Oligomenorrhea was the commonest menstrual irregularity found in 203 [63.83%] women. Mild hirsutism was noted in 204 [64.15%] women. On transvaginal scan PCO were observed in 298 [93.71%] women. Class I obesity was observed in 64 [20.12%], while 8.49% [n=27] had class II obesity. Class III obesity was found in 2[0.62%] women only. The number of overweight women was 132[41.50%]. High LH/FSH ratio was found in 185 [58.17%] women. Insulin resistance was observed in 201[63.20%] women. All manifestations of PCOS were more frequent and severe in obese patients

ABSTRACT

Herbal medicine is gaining great importance in the treatment of various diseases. Herbal extracts are being vastly used in advanced countries to cure health related problems and have shown beneficial effects over modern medicines. In many cases, herbal drug have proved to be safe and effective with no or minimum side effects. Herbal plants like Aloe Vera have been in use since the earliest days of recorded history, for various ailments including the healing of wound, and as an anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and antiviral agent, as well as an astringent, emollient, pain reliever, an excellent moisturizing agent, and immune modulator. It also helps in RBCs production and development. It is very popular in European countries and United State particularly as a component of cosmetic preparations for the treatment of multiple skin infections, boils and for certain other purposes like moisturizing, enhancing skin appearance marking it smooth and to protect and heal the skin. This plant contains several vitamins and minerals, which play an important role to regulate many biological functions. In this article the importance of herbal medicines particularly Aloe Vera and its applications in various ailments and cosmetics have been presented
