ABSTRACT

The snake genus Lachesis provokes 2 to 3% of snakebites in Colombia every year. Two Lachesis species, L. acrochorda and L. muta, share habitats with snakes from another genus, namely Bothrops asper and B. atrox. Lachesis venom causes systemic and local effects such as swelling, hemorrhaging, myonecrosis, hemostatic disorders and nephrotoxic symptoms similar to those induced by Bothrops, Portidium and Bothriechis bites. Bothrops antivenoms neutralize a variety of Lachesis venom toxins. However, these products are unable to avoid coagulation problems provoked by Lachesis snakebites. Thus, it is important to ascertain whether the envenomation was caused by a Bothrops or Lachesis snake. The present study found enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) efficient for detecting Lachesis acrochorda venom in a concentration range of 3.9 to 1000 ng/mL, which did not show a cross-reaction with Bothrops, Portidium, Botriechis and Crotalus venoms. Furthermore, one fraction of L. acrochorda venom that did not show crossreactivity with B. asper venom was isolated using the same ELISA antibodies; some of its proteins were identified including one Gal-specific lectin and one metalloproteinase. This test may be useful to physicians, since it could be applicable for tracking the kinetic distribution of antigens in patients or experimentally envenomed animals.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The influence of chromium supplementation on some blood variables in 11 adult stallions used for policing activities was evaluated. Each animal was treated with 11mg of chromium/400kg body weight, orally, for a period of 30 days. On days 0 (before) and 30 (after) the animals were evaluated and blood samples were obtained before and after exercise. Plasma glucose and lactate and serum cortisol and insulin were analyzed in each of these moments. On day 0, plasma glucose concentrations were 68.4±5.6mg/dL and 78.7±6.5mg/dL; plasma lactate concentrations were 6.2±0.6mg/dL and 13.1±7.6mg/dL; serum cortisol values were 48.5±7.9ng/mL and 42.6±19.7ng/mL; and serum insulin values were 3.0±6.4µUI/mL and 1.9±1.7µUI/mL, respectively, before and after exercise. On day 30, plasma glucose concentrations were 73.3±5.7mg/dL and 78.4±6.7mg/dL; plasma lactate concentrations were 7.3±0.9mg/dL and 7.6±1.2mg/dL; serum cortisol values were 62.9±21.8ng/mL and 40.3±17.0ng/mL; and serum insulin values were 1.4±1.3µUI/mL and 1.7±1.4µUI/mL, respectively, before and after exercise. As an effect of the exercise, a decrease was shown in the concentration of serum insulin and an increase in plasma lactate and glucose. Chromium supplementation resulted in a reduction of lactate values after physical activity, possibly indicating that chromium contributed to a better utilization of plasma glucose and to a better adaptation of animals to physical activity.


O presente trabalho avaliou a influência da suplementação com cromo em algumas variáveis sanguíneas em 11 equinos machos, adultos, usados em atividade de policiamento. Cada animal recebeu 11mg de cromo/400kg de peso corpóreo, via oral, durante 30 dias. Nos dias 0 (antes) e 30 (após), os animais foram avaliados e amostras de sangue foram obtidas antes e após o exercício. Glicose e lactato plasmáticos e cortisol e insulina séricas foram determinados. No dia 0, as concentrações de glicose plasmática foram 68,4±5,6mg/dL e 78,7±6,5mg/dL; de lactato plasmático, 6,2±0,6mg/dL e 13,1±7,6mg/dL; de cortisol sérico, 48,5±7,9ng/mL e 42,6±19,7ng/mL; e de insulina sérica, 3,0±6,4µUI/m L e 1,9±1,7µUI/mL, respectivamente, antes e após o exercício. No dia 30, as concentrações de glicose plasmática foram 73,3±5,7mg/dL e 78,4±6,7mg/dL; de lactato plasmático, 7,3±0,9mg/dL e 7,6±1,2mg/dL; de cortisol sérico, 62,9±21,8ng/mL e 40,3±17,0ng/mL; e de insulina sérica, 1,4±1,3µUI/mL e 1,7±1,4µUI/mL, respectivamente, antes e após o exercício. Como efeito do exercício, foi demonstrado redução na concentração sérica de insulina e aumento no lactato e glicose plasmáticas. A suplementação com cromo resulto u em redução dos valores de lactato após a atividade física, possivelmente indicando que o cromo contribuiu para a melhor utilização da glicose plasmática e melhor adaptação ao exercício físico realizado.

ABSTRACT

Foram realizados dois testes de redução de ovos de helmintos por grama de fezes em bovinos naturalmente infectados. No primeiro teste utilizaram-se quatro grupos tratados: ivermectina 1 por cento (IVM), produto endectocida experimental (PEE), ivermectina LA 1 por cento (IVMLA) e doramectina 1 por cento (DRM). A contagem de ovos por gramas de fezes (OPG) foi realizada durante 14 dias pós-tratamento. Foram observadas as seguintes taxas de eficácia: IVM, -1,3 por cento; PEE, 100 por cento; IVMLA, 18,9 por cento e DRM 50,6 por cento. Os gêneros de helmintos encontrados foram Cooperia e Haemonchus. No segundo teste foram avaliadas moxidectina 1 por cento e abamectina 1 por cento, e ambas apresentaram eficácia acima de 99 por cento.

ABSTRACT

As radiações ultravioleta (divididas em ultravioleta A, B e C), por possuírem diferentes energias e comprimentos de onda, apresentam diferentes atividades sobre os organismos, sendo que algumas destas atividades são benéficas e outras, não. A fim de evitar os malefícios causados por estas radiações, existem produtos denominados fotoprotetores. Uma vez que os flavonóides são considerados um fator importante de proteção contra a radiação ultravioleta, alguns estudos concentram-se na avaliação da atividade fotoprotetora que algumas plantas, compostas por flavonóides, possam apresentar. Sendo assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a atividade fotoprotetora de extratos das flores e folhas de Achillea millefolium L. através de testes in vitro por espectrofotometria no ultravioleta. Embora a literatura descreva a presença de flavonóides nas flores e folhas de A. millefolium, não foi encontrada atividade fotoprotetora nos extratos testados.


The ultraviolet radiations (divided in ultraviolet A, B and C), have different energy and wave length; because of these properties, they show different activities on the organisms, being some beneficial and others not. In order to avoid the harmful effects that these radiations cause, there are products named sunscreens. Since the flavonoids are important protecting agents against the ultraviolet radiation, there are studies to evaluate the sunscreen activity that some plants (wich contain flavonoids) could show. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the sunscreen activity of Achillea millefolium L. flowers and leaves extracts by in vitro test using ultraviolet spectrophotometry. Although the literature reports the presence of flavonoids in A. millefolium flowers and leaves, this work did not find sunscreen activity in the tested extracts.

ABSTRACT

In 1983 a new funding program - PADACT ("Program de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Científico") - was created in Brazil to stimulate the development of research projects related to what was established as technological priorities. In this paper 3 features of the Biotechnology/Health subprogram of PADCT were studied: a) to what extent productivity of the leaders of the research projects affected the way they were evaluated by the award panel, b) the conflict of interest that might result from the composition of the award panel, and c) the final impact of the program on science and technology. In our sample of 210 submitted projects, 62 were funded. The data suggest that the selection of projects did not ensure a better funding for the more productive research leaders. The presence on the award panel of at least one member from the same institution of a given project increased the chance of its approval but, after approval, it had no influence on the amount of funds granted. In a subsample of 21 scientists, support to 24 projects did not increase the productivity level and 4 products in a preliminary phase of development were reported. The issue of trying to solve problems in areas where there is no established scientific competence is discussed
