ABSTRACT

This study was conducted with the main aim of evaluating ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography [ERCP] for their accuracy in the diagnosis of pancreatic and biliary disease. Fifty nine patients [35 females, 24 males] were enrolled. The results of ultrasound and ERCP were compared with the operative findings using a scoring system which allowed one choice per patient. The scoring was performed separately for gallbladder, bile duct, and pancreatic disease. Ultrasound and ERCP scored 64% and 46% of the expected ideal score [p>0.05] in gallbladder disease respectively, 2% and 76% of the expected ideal score [P<0.05] in bile duct disease respectively, 33% and 61% of the expected ideal score [p>0.05] in pancreatic disease respectively. The sensitivity of ultrasound and ERCP in gallbladder disease was 91.4% and 40% respectively, in bile duct disease 66.7% and 100% respectively, and in pancreatic disease 55.6% and 77.8% respectively. We recommend ultrasound for the diagnosis of gallbladder disease and ERCP for bile duct and pancreatic disease after initial evaluation with ultrasound
