ABSTRACT

Depression all to frequently complicates physical illness, such comorbid depression may adversely affect the outcome .of the physical condition and, in turn is perpetuated by it.We therefore set out to determine the rate of depressive symptoms and disorders in a sample of 400 in patient with chronic physical illness at Al Zahraa university Hospital, their ages ranged from 40-70 years, both sexes were included. They were subjected to complete physical and neurological examinations and then they were subjected to General Health questionnaire, those who scored 7 [cutting point] at GHC were subjected to Beck's Depressive Inventory for depressive symptoms, those with depressive symptoms were subjected to psychiatric interview and diagnosis according to DSMIV classification


Results: 60% of the total sample had probable minor psychiatric morbidity at the GHQ, 78% had depressive symptoms, while only 42% mounting to depressive disorder, the majority of cases were rated as mild to moderate seventy. The peak age of depressive symptoms was the highest at the age of 50-60, as it reached up to 20%. It was found that depression was significantlyrelated to hypertension, ischemic heart disease, cerebro vascular stroke and liver failure. On the other hand it was insignificant statistically with diabetes mellitus, parkinsonism, oestoprosis, and chest disease.We concluded that depression is very common among patients with chronic physical illness, So we are in need for orientation of general practitioners as well as our colleagues in the different specialties to be able to detect depression as it is often treatable and potentially reversible

ABSTRACT

A sample of 92 patients was chosen r and omly, all were admitted to hospital for treatment from drug abuse by their own will, 80 of them were males and 12 were females with age ranged between 17 and 40 years. The percentage of patients who were admitted to the hospital to be treated from substance abuse were as the following: Canabenoids 4%, opiate free pharmaceutical medications 22%, opiate containing pharmaceutical medication 26% and heroin 48%. Canabenoids [Banjo and Hashish] were the first substance abused by 65% the sample followed by alcohol 22%, opiate free drugs 8.7% and lastly opiate containing pharmacutical drugs by 4.3%. Sixty one patient of the sample were had cognitive distortion related to the use of the substance which was very high among Canabenoids abusers [100%] high among opiate free pharmaceutical medication [80%] and less among heroin users [63.6%] The peak age of onset of abuse in our samples was as following: 30% before 15 years 60% from 15up to 20 10% from 20 up to, 25 No one started above 35 years. 56.7% of the sample got more than 50%of the addiction severity index and 39% between 30-50% and only 4.3% less than 30%. There was a positive relation between high severity index and more cognitive distortion there was also a positive relation between a cognitive distortion and a parental history of abuse. A positive family history of drug abuse was found ip 56.3% of the sample
