ABSTRACT

The results of a survey of Sphagnum used by the Descoberto and Empanturrado rural communities (Guaratuba municipality and Guaratuba Environmental Protected Area EPA) are presented. The analysis was based on fresh material collected in different harvesting areas. Five species were recorded: S. capillifolium (Ehrh.) Hedw., S. cuspidatum Ehrh. ex Hoffm., S. erythrocalyx Hampe, S. perichaetiale Hampe and S. recurvum P. Beauv.. All of them are native species that grow spontaneously in that region and are intensively harvested by the local community. A key is presented to differentiate the species, and the botanical description, common names, geographic distribution and illustrations for each species are included.

ABSTRACT

Bromeliads grow almost exclusively in the New World tropics and subtropics, mainly in South America in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (ca. 1200 species). Within the last few decades, their beautiful shapes and colors, low maintenance and easy adaptability to small gardens have brought bromeliads into worldwide use as ornamental plants. While the ornamental bromeliad trade could make significant contributions to household economies in rural areas, the trade may represent a significant threat in some of the bromeliad biodiversity hotspot countries such as Brazil, Bolivia and Colombia. This paper presents an overview of production volumes, analysis of the Brazilian bromeliads trade chain at the state, national and international levels and recommendations to address development and conservation challenges.

ABSTRACT

The results of a survey of non-timber forest products (NTFP) associated with tree species (CBH 15 cm) of riparian forest remnants in the upper Paraná river (Mata do Araldo) are presented. The species examined were ranked according to their potential value for sustainable exploitation (PVSE) of NTFP, applying the following information obtained from literature review: density, parts used, capacity for natural regeneration and growth, knowledge about reproductive biology and population dynamic, required processing and level of injury or toxicity. For a total of 58 species, 29 reached PVSE higher than 10, being considered of high potential for sustainable exploitation of NTFP. Among these, the most important were Inga vera and Lonchocarpus cultratus, with VPES = 14 as beekeeping, and with PVSE = 13, for ecological use, ornamental and food. In addition, Parapiptadenia rigida, also has PVSE = 13 as beekeeping and medicinal. The results show a promising basis for achieving goals of conservation and regional development, from sustainable alternative use of forest resources. In particular, the use of species as sources of medicinal, ecological, ornamental, beekeeping and biochemical resources was recorded as the primary vocation for the study area.

ABSTRACT

The results of a floristic survey of Vochysia Aubl in the state of Paraná are presented. The analysis was based on fresh material collected in different regions of the state as well as on dried material from several national and foreign herbaria. Three species were registered: V. tucanorum Mart., V. bifalcata Warm . and V. magnifica Warm. A key to differentiate the species is presented and for each species, the botanical description, common names, phenology data, the geographic distribution, uses and illustrations are included.
