ABSTRACT
A ansiedade é um importante, se não o maior, componente de estresse dos pacientes odontológicos. A administração de drogas orais tranquilizantes vem sendo utilizada previamente à cirurgia oral. Os benzodiazepínicos são as drogas mais utilizadas nesse tipo de situação, porém apresentam efeitos indesejáveis. A literatura nos mostra que a Valeriana officinalis é eficaz contra ansiedade, angústia, leves desequilíbrios do sistema nervoso e não tem contra-indicações.Diferentemente dos benzodiazepínicos, é basicamente isenta de efeitos colaterais quando utilizada nas doses recomendadas. É interessante que pesquisadores da odontologia busquem maiores informações sobre o mecanismo de ação desta substância por meio de ensaios clínicos, pois talvez seja uma alternativa viável para os cirurgiões-dentistas que fazem uso da pré-medicação, já que tem suas virtudes medicinais elucidadas desde o século IX e não acarreta desconforto para o paciente após a intervenção.
The anxiety is an important, if not the bigger, stress component of the odontologic patients. The administration of tranquillizing oral drugs has being used previously to the oral surgery. Thebenzodiazepinics are the most used drugs in this type of situation, however they present undesirable effects. The literature shows us that the Valeriana officinalis is efficient against anxiety, anguish, light disequilibria of the nervous system and does not have contraindications. Differently of thebenzodiazepinics, is basically exempt from collateral effects when used in the recommended doses. It is interesting that odontology researchers seek for greater information on the mechanism of action of this substance through clinical assays, therefore perhaps it should be a viable alternative for thesurgeon-dentists who make use of the pre-medication, considering that it has its medicinal virtues elucidated since IX century and does not cause discomfort for the patient after the intervention.
