ABSTRACT

Bhasmas are the most frequently used medicines in the field of Ayurveda as it tends to act fast when compared to other modes of medication. It works on the principle of nanoparticle assimilation, which provides higher bioavailability due its higher surface area and lesser particle size. This invention was made back in ancient days, which proves that during those ages there were faster methods of medical aids for a disease proving to be fatal. Abhraka is one of the main drugs used in Ayurveda mainly in the form of a Bhasma. It is abundantly used in single / compound forms for diseases like Cold, Cough, Diabetes, Anemia, asthma, etc. For a Bhasma to act significantly without side-effects it has to be properly rendered to purifactory procedures and Incineration at optimum temperature. This article basically deals with Samanya Shodana, Dhanyabhraka nirmana and Marana of Abhraka followed by its analysis by SEM-EDX which proved that There was reduction in some of the elements present in the drug after giving successive putas, till the formation of a Bhasma. The atomic percentage of Oxygen increased when bhasma was formed, hence suggesting it to be in oxide form. There was absence of heavy metals after giving puta according to the classical reference. Microscopic images of the Churna and Bhasma could be analysed and the Particle size of bhasma could be analysed which was 580.2 nm.

ABSTRACT

Background: The position of mental foramen is very important because it will be helpful to localize the importantneurovascular bundle passing through. It is a landmark to facilitate surgical, local anaesthetic and otherinvasive procedures for dental surgeons performing peri-apical surgery in the mental region of mandible.Aims & Objective: To study morphometric analysis of mental foramen in dry human mandibles.Materials and Methods: 50 dried adult human mandibles with dentition and intact alveolar margin of unknownsex were used for this study. The morphometric measurements were recorded using Vernier callipers. Results: The most commonly present position of the MF as related to the lower set of teeth was in line with thesecond premolar, Type 3 - 48 % cases on the right side and type 4 -52% cases on the left sideConclusion: The knowledge of the distances from surgically encountered anatomical landmarks in the presentstudy provide valuable information to dental surgeons that will facilitate effective localization of the neurovascularbundle passing through mental foramen, thus avoiding complications from local anaesthetic, surgical and otherinvasive procedures. The study is also of forensic significance as the position of mental foramen also helps indetermination of sex of an individual

ABSTRACT

Pelvic and para aortic lymph nodes are the common sites of metastasis in endometrial carcinoma. The role of lymphadenectomy is widely discussed in literature with varying results. In this study we did a retrospective analysis of endometrial cancer patients to correlate lymphadenectomy with overall and disease free survival. A retrospective review of 110 patients with carcinoma endometrium who underwent staging laparotomy at our institute during the period 2006-2010. Patients who underwent node dissections were categorized as group I and the rest as group II. Median lymph node count was 10. Grade of the tumor, nodal status and lymphadenectomy were correlated with overall and disease free survival. Lymph node metastasis and grade of tumor are significant predictors of survival. Lymphadenectomy did not show significant survival benefit. It has helped to upstage the disease so that appropriate adjuvant therapy could be planned. A prospective randomized control trial with complete pelvic and para aortic node dissection and uniform adjuvant therapy considering nodal status may help to answer the confusion regarding lymphadenectomy

ABSTRACT

Lipoid pneumonia in children follows mineral oil aspiration and may result in acute respiratory failure. Majority of the patients recover without long-term morbidity, though a few may be left with residual damage to the lungs. We report a case of a two-and-a-half-year-old child with persistent lipoid pneumonia following accidental inhalation of machine oil, who was successfully treated with steroids.
