ABSTRACT

Extracts of 13 Jordanian medicinal plant species in 9 families were evaluated against 8 microorganisms. The chloroform and hexane fractions of Linum usitatissimum showed the strongest activity against S. pneumonia, Peganum harmala showed the strongest activities against B. hemolytic streptococcus group A. The aqueous fractions of Quercus coccifera, Rosmarinus officinalis and Eucalyptus camaldulensis showed strong activities against S. aureus and the same activities were observed in the fractions of Q. infectoria, except the aqueous and butanolic ones. Also, the aqueous fractions of Punica granatum showed the same activity. The aqueous fractions of P. harmala showed the strongest activity against Hemophilus influenzae and Proteus mirabilis. The ethanolic extract of Q. infectoria showed the strongest activity against P. mirabilis and P. aeruginosa and S. aureus and the same activities were seen in the aqueous and methanolic fractions of this plant. In addition, the methanolic fraction of this plant showed the strongest activity against E. coli

ABSTRACT

Seven alkaloids and five coumarins have been identified from the roots, leaves, unripe fruits and seeds of M and ragora autumnalis, which grows widely in Jordan. The isolated alkaloids were atropine, apoatropine, hyoscyamine, scopolamine, belladonine, cuscohygrine and scopine. The isolated coumarins are herniarin, umbelliferone, angelicin, scopoletin and scopolin. Sucrose and chlorogenic acid were also isolated and identified
