ABSTRACT

Introduction: Endemic, enteric infectious agents continue to wreak havoc on the health of communities in our country. The present study was undertaken with the aim of elucidating the association of typhoid fever with Hepatitis A(HAV) and Hepatitis E (HEV) viral infections as there is a paucity of data regarding the prevalence of concurrent infections with these pathogens from our region. Materials and Methods: Of the serum specimens received during February – March 2018, 100 samples were routinely tested by Widal tube agglutination method. The same specimens were analysed for the presence of HAVand HEV IgM antibodies by ELISA. Results: The prevalence of typhoid, HAV and HEV in the study population was 3 %, 1% and 3% respectively while co-infection with typhoid and HEVwas found in 1% of cases. Conclusions: There is a need to conduct similar studies but on a larger scale to correctly estimate the burden of co-infections with common enteric pathogens.

ABSTRACT

Ancient Unani scholars described various modes of treatment; Ilaj-bil-Tadbeer [Regimental Therapy] is one of them. This type of therapy is applied for treatment as well as prevention of certain diseases. Dalak is an important class of regimental therapy. It is an emerging trend in present world health scenario. People want to get relief by alternative medicine as compared to modern chemical drugs, which are harmful and injurious to health. It includes light or hard stroking, compression [kneading, squeezing, friction, percussion, etc.]. The concept of massage has been valid since prehistoric times. It probably evolved from the instinctive contact among human beings. Later, intellectual development led to its integration into various systems of medicine. Ancient Unani scholars described dalak, especially for joints and muscle ailments, which were later extended to relieve deformities of arthritis and refresh/functionalize muscles following paralysis. Great Unani physicians like Razi, Ibn Sina and Ibn Rushd etc. have discussed this subject in detail. Dalak enhances body circulation and also improves movement of particular organs.
