ABSTRACT

A study of gender differences in health care utilization and outcome of respiratory tuberculosis was carried out in Alexandria, Egypt. A cohort of 334 patients was followed-up for 8 months; 69.2% of cases were males. The pattern of tuberculosis symptoms was similar for both sexes. Women started treatment earlier than men. Women had significantly lower scores in knowledge, beliefs and attitudes about tuberculosis than men. Compliance was unsatisfactory for both sexes. Men tended to be more adherent to drugs and to sputum and X-ray examinations but there were no sex differences in compliance with health education and medical examinations. No significant sex differences in treatment outcome were found: the overall cure rate was 60.5% and treatment failure was 4.8%. Multiple regression analysis showed satisfaction with medical care was the only significant predictor of treatment failure

ABSTRACT

We report a case of Goldenhar syndrome and hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 [HTT1], to our knowledge an association not previously described. This case further increases the diversity of observations and clinical descriptions of patients with this complex syndrome. We discuss pathogenetic aspects, and demonstrate further evidence of the effectiveness of 2-[2-nitro-4-trifluoromethyl benzoyl]-1,3-cyclohexanedione in the treatment of HTT1

ABSTRACT

We considered the clinical, biochemical and radiological findings, and response to pyridoxine [vitamin B6] of 24 classic homocystinuric patients [15 females, 9 males] diagnosed at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre. Common clinical findings included ectopia lentis [20 patients], skeletal system involvement [18 patients], vascular system involvement [9 patients] and mental retardation [all patients to varying degrees]. A number of unusual findings were reported. The parents of 21 patients were first-degree relatives and 19 patients had at least one other family member affected by the same disease. Only 4 patients responded to pyridoxine; their methionine level decreased to almost normal range

ABSTRACT

We retrospectively reviewed clinical and biochemical data of four patients diagnosed with tyrosinaemia type II. Diagnosis was established by high plasma tyrosine and normal plasma phenylalanine levels using plasma high-pressure liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. All patients were mildly mentally retarded and had painful non-pruritic and hyperkeratotic plaques on the soles and palms. There were no ophthalmic symptoms. The patients dramatically responded clinically and biochemically to a diet restricted in tyrosine and phenylalanine

ABSTRACT

Studying the epidemiology of ADHD in elementary schools was the aim of this study. A total of 501 pupils were selected out of 133082 pupils using the multistage stratified sampling technique. The Arabic version of Conner's rating scale was used to assess their attention level. The study revealed that prevalence of ADHD among screened pupils was 19.56%. Second grade pupils had a significantly higher prevalence than 1st grades [23.62%, 15.38%, respectively, Z =2.002]. Insignificant differences were found as regards type of school [Z =1.47], sex [X 2 =3.33], average age [t =0.12]. However, a significant difference was observed between pupils with different scholastic achievement and ADHD where it is more significantly encountered among those with poor level [X4 2 =48.129]. Type of family, parent's education and fathers occupation were found to be significantly affecting prevalence of ADHD. In conclusion, a considerable proportion of elementary school pupils are suffering from ADHD. Family problems, low educational level of parents and low socioeconomic status as measured by parents occupation adversely affect attention of these pupils

ABSTRACT

Relative rates of ingestion of fourth instar larvae of Culex pipiens as indicated by the number of substrate filled gut segments per unit time were determined and compared after exposure to nutritive and inert particles. Food particles with nutritive values [yeast, dried green algae, Chlamydomonas reinhordtii, wheat flour, fishmeal and corn flour] were ingested approximately 3-4 times faster than inert particles [koalin, talk, charcoal and chalk]. Aqueous extracts of yeast or dried algae accelerated ingestion of inert particles [in laboratory and in larval natural habitat] to the level of ingestion of nutritive particles, demonstrating gustatory stimulation of larvae. In the subsequent time span, ingestion rates of food particles decreased continuously with satiation of larvae

ABSTRACT

The present study is based on a sample of 300 normal healthy Egyptian males in Alexandria. Each subject has been studied for 3 anthropometric measurements; height, hand length and hand breadth. The data were computed and analyzed for the mean standard deviation and regressions. Regression lines have been drawn for the estimation of stature from somatometry of the hand. The data were also compared to similar studies

ABSTRACT

A trial was conducted to assess: [1] some personality characteristics of geriatric homes' inhabitants in Alexandria, and [2] the relationships between different ecological factors and the discovered personality traits of elderlies in these homes. The results showed that obsession was most common personality trait followed by depression, psychosomaticism, anxiety, phobia and, lastly, hysteria. Statistically non significant relationships were found between these traits and sex, type of family, hobbies and emotional response for admission. The relations between the age and income and obsession, between marital status and phobia and between views on the future and anxiety were significant
