ABSTRACT

Kanakabindhvarishtam is a formulation included in Arishta kalpana. It is mentioned by Acharya Charaka in the context of Kushta chikitsa. The formulation is having Khadira (Acacia Catechu) as Kashaya Dravya (decoction) and Triphala (Amalaki, Vibeetaki, Hareetaki), Trikadu (Maricham, Sundi, Pippali), Vidanga, Mustha, Indrayava, Guduchi, Haridra, Daruharidra and Vasa Moola as Prakshepa Dravyas. Even though Guda and honey were not mentioned in the yoga, they were added in order to facilitate the fermentation process. Dhataki flowers which are commonly used to accelerate the fermentation process were not added in the preparation. The whole process were carried out in two stages- initial stage include the preparation of Kanakabindhvarishta according to the reference by Charaka Acharya, and in the 2nd stage Physico chemical analysis of the yoga were carried out. The Physico chemical parameters include pH value (5.28), total solid content (2.03%), specific gravity (1.0105), reducing sugar (2.8129%), total sugar (6.43%) and alcoholic content (8%). 35lt of Arishta was prepared by fermentation process. The Sandhana patra (fermentation vessel) in which the Arishta was prepared were kept for a period of 45 days and all the Arishta siddha lakshanas were obtained as per the reference

ABSTRACT

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common metabolic and reproductive disorders among women of reproductive age. It is characterized clinically as a combination of ovulatory dysfunction, hyper androgenic state and abnormal ovarian morphology. Women with PCOS are at increased risk of presenting with menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, obesity, insulin resistance, impaired glucose tolerance, Type 2 Diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular problems. PCOS being a syndrome cannot be correlated with any particular disease in Ayurveda. Hence for the better comprehension of this disease in terms with Ayurveda, the diseases mentioned in Ayurveda classics manifesting with signs and symptoms of PCOS have been studied in detail in relation with Nidana, Dosha, Srotas involved and their management. Diseases like Vandhya, Arajaska, Nashtarthava, Arthavakshaya and Pushpagni jathaharini shows resemblance in signs and symptoms and to some extend these can be related with PCOS

ABSTRACT

Background: The coracoacromial ligament (CAL) as an integral component of the coracoacromial arch, plays animportant role in shoulder biomechanics, joint stability, and proprioception thus maintains static restraint dueto its dynamic interactions with ligaments, muscles and bony elements around the shoulder joint. Age-dependentchanges due to chronic stress and cellular degradation cause thickening and stiffening of the CAL that maycontribute to a spectrum of shoulder pathology from capsular tightness to rotator cuff tear arthropathy andimpingement syndrome. Objectives: This study conducted to observe the different types of CAL and its relationship with coracoacromialveil.Materials and Methods: The study conducted on 50 upper limbs at Bowring & Lady Curzon medical college &research institute and Bangalore medical college & research institute. The upper limbs were dissected at theshoulder joint complex and acromion process and coracoid process were appreciated and coracoacromialligaments were appreciated for their types and morphometry. Results and Conclusion: Four types of CAL were observed in this study. These are Y shaped CAL in 12 (24%) upperlimbs, broad banded in 8 (16%), quadrangular band shaped in 25 (50%) and multiple banded in 5(10

ABSTRACT

Background: Cancer is a multi-cellular disease which can arise from any cell type and organs. Adverse drug reactions (ADR) are undesirable consequence of cancer chemotherapeutic drugs. A great importance has to be given for their assessment, detection, monitoring, reporting and preventing these ADR for the beneficial effects of the patients. So the present study was undertaken for the purpose of detecting and quantifying those adverse reactions which is of some importance in therapeutic setting. Methods: A prospective observational study conducted in chemotherapy ward, male and female patients of any age receiving cancer chemotherapy and presenting with ADR’s in duration of 3 months. Results: 160 patients were observed. Out of 160 patients 123 presented with ADR’s. Most common ADR’s were loss of appetite (67.6), diarrhea (61.8%), vomiting (21.5%), nausea (17.7%), anemia (24.7%). Cisplatin, paclitaxel, oxaliplatin, doxorubicin, gefitinib are common drugs causing ADR’s.Conclusions: Cancer chemotherapeutic drugs are associated with various adverse reactions. This study shows the importance of active monitoring of these reactions and measures to prevent their effects early in the treatment of cancer.

ABSTRACT

Acquired thymic cyst are multilocular and they occur de novo or in association with mediastinal neoplasm, systemic autoimmune diseases and trauma. Here, we report a case of acquired multilocular thymic cyst due to non-specific inflammatory etiology in a 42-year old gentleman and our approach to diagnosis and management of anterior mediastinal mass. With no specific clinical symptom, he was diagnosed with anterior mediastinal mass incidentally by imaging studies. Definitive diagnosis of multilocular thymic cyst was obtained by tissue diagnosis of the anterior mediastinal mass resected during the surgery.

ABSTRACT

Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is the one of the most common problem among patients admitted for gynecological surgeries. There are various pathologies which can lead to AUB. History, blood investigations, ultrasonography, hysteroscopy and endometrial aspiration and those who failed to respond for medical management, underwent surgical profile and hysterectomies were done. Later on, FIGO proposed PALM-COEIN system for systematic and efficient management of AUB, which helps in better and successful management of AUB patients. Aim: To analyze the etiology of abnormal uterine bleeding in women who underwent surgical management. Materials and methods: It was a retrospective study done in Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of King George Hospital, Visakhapatnam from January 2017 to December 2018. A total of 143 cases who failed to respond for medical management and underwent surgeries like hysterectomies, myomectomies and polypectomies for AUB, were selected and hysterectomy specimens were evaluated in a structured proforma. Results: The most common age-group presenting with AUB was 45 to 49 years of age (30.06%). Dysmenorrhoea was found to be the most common associated symptom in AUB patients (68.3%). The most common surgical procedure done was Total Abdominal Hsterectomy (75%). As per PALMCOEIN classification, the most common type in our study was found to be AUBL (48.2%). Nissy G, Sujatha R, N. Uma, S. Sowmya, Pratyusha R. Analysis of etiology in women who underwent surgical management for abnormal uterine bleeding in a tertiary care centre, Visakhapatnam. IAIM, 2019; 6(10): 82-85. Page 83 Conclusions: Incidence and pattern of AUB varies according to the age of the patient. It is more common in perimenopausal age-group. Classification of AUB as per PALM-COEIN helps in better understanding of disease and successful management of patients.
