ABSTRACT

To assess pharmacokinetics and bioequivalence of a locally produced cephalexin monohydrate suspension. Ten ml of test and reference products were given to 12 healthy male volunteers in a two-way open randomized cross-over study with a one week washout period. Blood samples were drawn at specified time intervals and plasma concentration of cephalexin was measured using HPLC with UV detection. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined by non-compartmental analysis and tested statistically using two one-sided t-test and ANOVA. Pharmacokinetic parameters [Mean +/- SD] of test and reference suspensions are: T[max] 0.9 +/- 0.2 and 0.9 +/- 0.3 h, C[max] 19.4 +/- 3.9 micro g/ml and 18.7 +/- 2.2 micro g/ml, AUC infinity 29.5 +/- 7.5 and 28.2 +/- 5.2 micro g/ml, MRT 1.56 +/- 0.19 and 1.59 +/- 0.18 h, t[1/2] 0.82 +/- 0.06 and 0.86 +/- 0.13 h, CL/F 17.9 +/- 4.1 and 18.4 +/- 3.8 L/h, Vd/F 21.0 +/- 4.6 and 22.7 +/- 4.6 L. No statistically significant differences were observed between the two formulations [P>0.05]. 90% confidence intervals [CI] of the ratio of means were 83-117%, 87.8-112.2% and 85.2-114.8% for AUC infinity, C[max], and T[max], respectively. Since the 90% CIs were within the acceptable range of bioequivalence [80-120%], the test product is deemed bioequivalent to the reference product

ABSTRACT

Hutchinson Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS) is a rare, sporadic, autosomal dominant syndrome that involves premature ageing and death at early age due to myocardial infarction or stroke. A 30-year-old male with clinical and radiologic features highly suggestive of HGPS is presented here with description of differential diagnosis, dental considerations and review of literature.

ABSTRACT

The immobilization of Saccharomyces cerevisiae NRRL 567 biomass has been used to demonstrate its potential for removal and recovery of chromium ions from waste water streams. The immobilization process was carried out using three different immobilizing agents namely; Ca alginate, polyacrylamide and silica gel. Tris-HCI [pH 7.2] was the most suitable buffer for chromium removal on using the tested immobilizing agents. Ca alginate 3%, at residence time 30 min offered high removal of chromium ions [81.1%]. However, silica gel was found to be the best immobilizing agent, since 91.6% of chromium ions were removed. Furthermore, on increasing the dry weight of the used S. cerevisiae up to 50 mg/ml of the buffered chromium solution, the amount of the removed chromium ions reached about 97%. Elution of loaded chromium ions from the yeast cells immobilized on silica gel was successively achieved using 1% EDTA solution. Similarly, HCI and H[2]SO[4] solutions were found to be efficient in releasing chromium ions

ABSTRACT

The pathogenesis of recurrent vaginal c and idosis in women with no predisposing factors is still poorly understood. Twenty women [20-45 years] suffering from this syndrome and 22 healthy females [control group] were included in this study. There was a decrease in the percentage of total T-cells in 65% of the patients and a decrease in the percentage of phagocytes in 80% of them, with a statistically significant decrease in their mean percentages compared to the controls. On assessing the T-cell function by the macrophage migration inhibition test, no significant difference between patients and controls was found on using the phytohemagglutinin as a mitogen. While a significant defect was found in the T-cell function among the patients compared to the controls when C and ida albicans antigen was used. The percentage of B-cells and T-helper, T-suppressor and TH:TS ratio were found not to be different when the patients and controls were compared
