ABSTRACT

To determine the frequency of post traumatic stress disorder in children in Gaza strip attending the psychiatry clinic of the Jordanian field hospital one year after the exposure to the latest acts of war. This study was conducted using a structured psychiatric interview based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual -Fourth Edition- Text Revised for post traumatic stress disorder, in order to assess post traumatic stress disorder in children referred to psychiatric clinic from pediatric and family medicine clinics with abnormal behavior. In the selected age group of children between [5-14], a total of 827 children were found to have visited the pediatric and family medicine clinics during the two months study period. Out of the total, 196 children [23.7%] were referred to psychiatric clinic with abnormal behavior, out of which 173 children [20.9%] of the whole sample and [88.27%] of the referred children were found to have post traumatic stress disorder. The area of Gaza strip suffered to a massive extent over the past years which led to a serious frequency of post traumatic stress disorder amongst its children. In view of the persistent threats, siege, and lack of social and medical support, chances are little of having a decline in the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, as well as a decrease in the number of new post traumatic stress disorder cases

ABSTRACT

To study the applicability and complications of cataract surgery as an outpatient procedure at this hospital instead of the practiced inpatient policy. This was done with the aim of developing this service at the hospital. This study was done with an aim to establish this service at the hospital. It was done during the period from May 2001 to July 2003. It involved all patients who were planned for cataract surgery at this hospital during that period. Before enrolling patients in the study they were evaluated for having their surgery on outpatient basis. Criteria for evaluation includes assessment of the general health of the patient, discussion of any problems in transport to and from the hospital, and finally if the patient has any personal preference for inpatient or outpatient practice. The study design includes documenting the complications encountered and their frequency in view of comparing them with international figures. During the study period nine hundreds and eighty five patients were found to be planned for cataract surgery. Seven hundreds and seventy eight patients [79%] were considered suitable for outpatient service according to the evaluation criteria set and were enrolled in this study. Two hundreds and seven patients [21%] were excluded for different reasons. Complications included one case of endophthalmitis, one case of retrobulbar hemorrhage and one case of expulsive hemorrhage. This study confirms the applicability of change to outpatient senile cataract surgery at our hospital, it also confirms that it doesn't have a higher risk than the international figures. These facts encourages the development of the ambulatory care service for cataract surgery

ABSTRACT

To study satus of diabetic retinopathy and its correlation with duration and control of type- 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Setting: prince Rashid Ibn Al-Hasan Hospital. Irbid- Jordan Patienta and This is a propective study, in the period between July 2002 and May 2003, where 510 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients attending internal clinics were evaluated for their diabetic retinopathy status. ABSTRACT

To evaluate peribulbar local anesthesia for senile cataract surgery at Prince Rahsed Hospital.Materials and This was a prospective study of patients undergoing senile cataract surgery with peribulbar anesthesia between April, 2001 and April,2002 at Prince Rashed Hospital. One hundred and ninety senile cataract patients who were admitted for cataract surgery were evaluated for local anesthesia. One hundred and seventy two [88 males and 84 females] were found suitable for local anesthesia and were entered into the study. The remaining eighteen patients had surgery under general anesthesia and were excluded from the study.A change to general anesthesia was done in one case. Ninety% of cases had no complication. Complications such as scleral perforation or retrobulbar hemorrhage did not occur. Our study confirms the safety and applicability of cataract surgery performed with peribulbar anesthesia in our setting. Furthermore it solved the problem of those medically compromised patients whose operations were repeatedly delayed due to their unfitness for general anesthesia
