ABSTRACT

Se trata de un estudio transversal, analítico, observacional y comparativo realizado mediante una metodología cualitativa en bancos de sangre; la etapa de la recolección de información inició a finales de noviembre de 2001 y se concluyó en noviembre del 2002. La muestra consistió en tres bancos que están ubicados en el Área Metropolitana : el Banco de Sangre del Hospital Nacional de Niños, BS-HNN, el Banco de Sangre del Hospital San Juan de Dios, BS-HSJD y el Banco Nacional de Sangre, BNS. Este trabajo busca identificar los conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas de las personas aptas para donar sangre, respecto a esa acción, así como del público en general, incluyendo no donantes y donantes potenciales, y del personal de salud de los bancos sobe la donación de sangre, el funcionamiento interno en tres bancos de sangre, la interacción entre el personal de salud y los donantes y determinar las necesidades de información, educación y comunicación que motiva o limitan la donación voluntaria de sangre...


It is a cross-sectional, analytical,observational, comparative studyusing a qualitative methodology inblood banks. The stage of gatheringinformation began at the end ofNovember, 2001 and concluded inNovember, 2002. The sample consistedon three blood banks located in theMetropolitan Area: the blood donationpoint of Hospital Nacional de Niños(BS-HNN), the blood donation pointof Hospital San Juan de Dios (BSHSJD)and Banco Nacional de Sangre(BNS). This work seeks identify the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding blood donation of people apt to donate, as well as the general public (including non-donors and potential donors), and the health personnel in regards to blood donation, internal operation in the 3 blood banks, and the interaction between health personnel and the donors. It is also oriented to determine the necessities of information,education and communication thatmotivate or limited the voluntarydonation of blood. This information willbe used like an input for developmentof strategies of communication andeducation to promote the voluntarydonation and to retain current donorswho are within that category. As a total, it was made 92 interviews to donors, 6 to non-donors and workers of blood banks, 30 observations to the interaction donor-personnel, observations to the physical facilities of each bank and 12 focus groups. Thestudy will allow to obtain some findingsthat will guide future communicationand education actions at national,regional and local levels, orientedto motivate the altruistic voluntarydonation, as long as they are a partof an integral and permanent strategy.Also, they will help to improve someaspects related to the services of thestudied blood banks.
