ABSTRACT

A case-control study with 130 cases 130 controls was conducted on children up to 12 years of age to understand factors contributing to the occurrence of scabies in order to put a program for health education. Controls were chosen from apparently healthy children of the same age group accompanying patients with no scabies complaint to the same hospital. Beside proxy reporting of parents, children were examined dermatologically, weight and height were measured. The "Mantel-Haenszel odd ratio" and the Chi-square for trend test were found significantly higher in behavioral factors like sharing clothes and beds as well as bathing infrequently. Besides, significant difference was found between cases and controls as cases tend to live in overcrowded households, to have lower social standard score, more illiterate mothers and lower weight. It is recommended to educate mothers children the appropriate behavioral pattern such as frequent bathing, not interchanging clothes with others as these are also risk factors for other contagious diseases

ABSTRACT

Roots of essential hypertension are found in childhood. In this cross-sectional study it was aimed to find behavioral risk factors in pupils with elevated BP level to be able to educate them for changing their habits. In a multistage random sample of 234 pupils from governmental and private schools 23 of whom were found to have blood pressure [BP] level of 130/85 mmHg and more and were compared to 211 with less than 130/85 mmHg. Cases and non-cases were matched by school type, age and sex, beside major determinants raising BP weight, height and body mass index the crude odd ration [OR]. Mantel- Haenszel-R, chi-square test and the MHY-chi square test indicated significant differences in behavioral factors like tea drinking, adding salt before tasting food, sleeping less than 8 hours and having high stress and tension score. Though after specifying these exposure factors a follow-up and intervention study is needed to diagnose cases of hypertension and accordingly to modify pupils behavior and lower the risk of elevated BP levels
