Dystrophia myotonica presenting as infertility

We report the rare condition of dystrophia myotonica presenting as a case of infertility. The varied clinical manifestations of the syndrome are described and the histopathology of the testicular biopsy, results of electromyography, immunology, hormonal assays and management are discussed

Treatment of hyperthyroidism with radioiodine: review of results

We review our short term results of treatment of hyperthyroidism of various causes [Graves' disease; Plummer's disease and toxic multinodular goitre] with radioiodine I-131 at Dubai Hospital, Dubai. 21 cases, of which 17 were Graves' disease, 2 were Plummer's disease [toxic adenoma] and 2 were toxic multinodular goitre, were given radioiodine, either as the primary line of therapy [in 9 cases] or after failure of antithyroid drug therapy [in 12 cases]. Successful treatment, i.e. achieving euthyroidism, was obtained in 17 cases. Repeated doses [one or more] of radioiodine were needed in 4 cases. No serious side effects were reported by the patients but 4 developed hypothyroidism

Plummer's disease treated by 'radiation nodulectomy'

We report two cases of Plummer's disease [toxic thyroid adenoma] which have been successfully treated with radioiodine. Impressive post-therapy clinical and scintigraphic disappearance of the nodules is shown by thyroid scan pictures with results comparable, if not better, in terms of morbidity and convenience, to surgical nodulectomy
