Abstract Poultry industry is expanding rapidly and producing million tons of feather waste annually. Massive production of keratinaceous byproducts in the form of industrial wastes throughout the world necessitates its justified utilization. Chemical treatment of keratin waste is proclaimed as an eco-destructive approach by various researchers since it generates secondary pollutants. Keratinase released by a variety of microbes (bacteria and fungi) can be used for the effective treatment of keratin waste. Microbial degradation of keratin waste is an emerging and eco-friendly approach and offers dual benefits, i.e., treatment of recalcitrant pollutant (keratin) and procurement of a commercially important enzyme (keratinase). This study involves the isolation, characterization, and potential utility of fungal species for the degradation of chicken-feather waste through submerged and solid-state fermentation. The isolated fungus was identified and characterized as Aspergillus (A.) flavus. In a trial of 30 days, it was appeared that 74 and 8% feather weight was reduced through sub-merged and solid-state fermentation, respectively by A. flavus. The pH of the growth media in submerged fermentation was changed from 4.8 to 8.35. The exploited application of keratinolytic microbes is, therefore, recommended for the treatment of keratinaceous wastes to achieve dual benefits of remediation.

ABSTRACT

Background: In developing countries like Bangladesh, skin diseases are very much prevalent. On the other for the difference of climate and environment, the pattern of skin diseases differs from one country to another and even crosswise diverse parts within the same country. The prevalence of skin disease in the overall population varies from 11.16 % to 63 %. Moreover, this prevalence differs in different ages of the inhabitants of the same country. Aim of the study:The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of skin diseases in patients attending the OPD of Dermatology and Venereology in a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the outpatient department of Dermatology and Venereology in Kustia Medical College, Kustia, Bangladesh from January 2019 to December 2022. In total 400 skin diseases patients were included as the study population. According to the inclusion criteria of this study, patients of several age either male or female suffering from any kind of skin disease for at least one month were included as the study subjects. A predesigned questioner was used in data collection. All data were collected, processed and analyzed by using MS Office and SPSS version 23.0 programs as per need. Results:In this study, majority of the participants (55%) were with non-infective skin diseases. Besides this, 37% were with infective skin diseases and the rest 8% were with both infective as well as non-infective skin diseases. Among infective skin diseases group patients, the highest number of patients were with scabies which was found in 13.75% casas. Besides this, the frequencies of tinea infection, pyoderma, pityriasis versicolor, STD and herpes zoster were also noticeable. On the other hand, among non-infective skin diseases group patients, the highest number of patients were with eczema which was found in 15.25% patients. Besides this, the frequencies of ‘miscellaneous & mixed’ acne vulgaris, urticaria, psoriasis, nevoid disorder and alopecia were also noticeable.Conclusion: As per the findings of this current study we can conclude that, the prevalence of non-infective skin diseases is higher than that of infective skin diseases in Bangladesh. The frequencies of infective skin diseases like scabies, tinea infection, pyoderma, pityriasis versicolor, STD and herpes zoster as well as non-infective eczema, acne vulgaris, urticaria, psoriasis, nevoid disorder and alopecia claim more attention of physicians as well as health policy makers of Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT

In Egypt, orange juice industries generate huge amount of waste peel that could be a source of raw materials with high value and economic return. Here, we explored a better model for waste management of citrus processing waste in Egypt by developing an ecofriendly method for preparation of value added materials. A high grade pectin (HGP) was obtained from the crude acidic water extract of the peel after passing through Diaion HP20 column. The HGP showed potent antidiabetic activity at lower dose than those reported in literature. It possessed significant effect on blood glucose (BG) level, as well as parameters relevant to liver and kidney functions in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. On the other hand, the essential oil (EO) prepared by cold press showed the highest yield (0.72% w/w) and it is the most applicable method of isolate orange oil on pilot scale. EO showed significant antimicrobial activity against the tested food borne pathogens. In conclusion, high value materials — HGP and EO were prepared on pilot scale from the waste orange peel. While the HGP can be included in food supplement for diabetic patients, EO can be used as a natural food preservative.

In recent years, the number of cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Iran has increased. The goal of this study was to determine the epidemiological status, clinical symptoms, diagnostic methods, and treatment strategies of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Iran, with a focus on tuberculosis meningitis and miliary tuberculosis. Between January 1, 2000 and June 1, 2021, 1 651 cases of tuberculosis meningitis and miliary tuberculosis were discovered in Iran. The prevalence of tuberculosis meningitis was higher in Sistan and Baluchestan, South Khorasan, and Mazandaran compared with other provinces. The most prevalent symptoms of tuberculous meningitis were fever, anorexia, headache, neck stiffness, loss of consciousness, and vomiting. The most commonly used procedures for diagnosing tuberculous meningitis were polymerase chain reaction and cerebrospinal fluid culture. The most prevalent clinical symptoms of miliary tuberculosis were fever, lethargy, weariness, and anorexia. In 70% of chest radiographs, a miliary pattern was visible. Bone marrow biopsy was used to diagnose miliary tuberculosis in 80% of patients, while bronchoalveolar lavage was used in 20% of cases. The conventional 6-month treatment approach for tuberculous meningitis and miliary tuberculosis was used for all of the participants in the investigations. Given the high prevalence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis patients in Iran and the devastating consequences of the disease, the researchers recommend that further study be done to prevent extrapulmonary tuberculosis in the general population.

ABSTRACT

@#Plant essential oils were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The isolates (n=03) were procured from Institute of Microbiology, UVAS Lahore, Pakistan. After biochemical and 16S rRNA gene-based PCR characterization, accession numbers were retrieved from NCBI i.e. MW344063.1, MW344064.1 and MW344065.1. These isolates exhibited molecular positivity by multiplex PCR for mecA, coa and eta toxin genes. Moreover, these isolates exhibited resistance to cefoxitin, ampicillin, amoxicillin, penicillin, amoxicillin clavulanate, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and gentamicin. The antibiotic resistant isolates were evaluated for antimicrobial activity of plant essential oils. The highest zone of inhibition (mean ZOI±S.D.) was measured for Cinnamomum verum (22.67±1.52 mm) followed by Eucalyptus globulus (18.67±2.51 mm) and Syzygium aromaticum (12.67±2.51 mm). Lowest mean MIC value (0.33±0.11 mg/mL) was recorded for E. globulus. Eucalyptus globulus was processed for fractionation by column chromatography and n-hexane, chloroform, n-hexane + chloroform and ethyl-acetate fractions were evaluated for antibacterial activity. Lowest mean MIC (10.04±5.80 mg/mL) was recorded for E. globulus n-hexane fraction. Cell survival percentage of BHK21 cell line was 51.7% at 54.87mg/mL concentration of E. globulus n-hexane fraction. Through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of n-hexane fraction, benzene was found abundant (29.9%) as active compound. It was concluded that E. globulus n-hexane fraction exhibited significantly promising results against MRSA.

@#Introduction: The greatest protection against cervical cancer can be achieved through the combination of cervical screening via repeated Pap tests and HPV vaccination before first sexual intercourse. This study aimed to explore women’s perceptions and experiences of Pap test and colposcopy examination to avoid advance stage of cervical cancer. Methods: An exploratory qualitative approach was carried out using face-to face semi-structured interviews with 22 women attending for their Pap test appointment or colposcopy examination in the main hospital in Kirkuk, Iraq. The study took place between October 2019 and March 2020. The collected data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results: The findings revealed gap in knowledge regarding Pap test and colposcopy investigation among participants. Overall, three main categories emerged during data analyses namely, women’s awareness of Pap test; challenges to access cervical screening and colposcopy services; women’s views and suggestions to improve their access to cervical screening cervices. Conclusion: Currently, women living in Iraq have no access to regular cervical screening due to unavailability of the cervical screening programme in Iraq. This study provides evidence to develop strategies to enhance the existing cervical cancer prevention services. Health policy makers should consider the establishment of regular population based cervical screening. Health promotion efforts and interventions should focus on challenges and barriers influence the screening behavior among women living in Iraq

ABSTRACT

Objective: To examine the protective effect of Vitamin D3 against Type 3 diabetes-induced cognitive dysfunction in rats. Materials and Methods: Type 3 diabetes was induced by a high-fat diet plus streptozotocin in rats. Rats were divided into seven groups: negative control, positive control, Vitamin D3 groups (100, 500 and 1000 IU/kg/day), Vitamin D3 plus rivastigmine, and rivastigmine monotherapy. A radial arm maze test was used to assess cognitive function. Levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), dopamine (DA), nerve growth factor, neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in the hippocampus were estimated by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Results: Chronic treatment with Vitamin D3 significantly (P < 0.05) and dose dependently alleviated cognitive deficits, with enhancing cholinergic transmission pathway activity through attenuated hippocampal AChE and increased DA level (P < 0.001). Moreover, Vitamin D3 significantly increased (P < 0.001) neurotrophin levels as an underlying mechanism for the resulted improvement. Conclusion: Vitamin D3 plus rivastigmine (combined group) is better than Vitamin D (100 and 500 mg/kg/day) for improvement of AChE, DA, NT-3, and GDNF levels. Vitamin D (500 and 1000 IU/kg/day) was effective as a combined group in terms of the behavioral test.

The aim of the present study is determining depression predictors in NCCP patients. @*Methods@#The participants of this cross-sectional study were 361 NCCP patients. Patients filled out questionnaires concerning their sociodemographic, lifestyle, and clinical factors (severity of pain, type D personality, somatization, cardiac anxiety, fear of body sensations, and depression). @*Results@#Based on multiple ordinal logistic regression, lack of physical activity (odds ratio [OR], 1.78; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-2.87), sleep quality (OR, 2.98; 95% CI, 1.15-7.69), being a smoker (OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 2.41-4.03), present pain intensity (OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.05-1.11), type D personality (OR, 2.43; 95% CI, 1.47- 4.03), and somatization (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.15-1.3) were significant predictors of depression in NCCP patients. Additionally, multiple linear regression showed that being unmarried (β = 1.51, P = 0.008), lack of physical activity (β = 1.22, P = 0.015), sleep quality (β = 2.26, P = 0.022), present pain intensity (β = 0.07, P = 0.045), type D personality (β = 1.87, P < 0.001), somatization (β = 0.45, P < 0.001), and fear of bodily sensation (β = 0.04, P = 0.032) increased significantly depression scores in NCCP patients. @*Conclusions@#Physicians should consider the predictors of depression in NCCP patients which can lead to receiving effective psychological consultations and reducing the costs and ineffectual referrals to medical centers.

@#Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, especially in the Western world and Asia-Pacific regions. This study was designed to determine the prevalence of NAFLD detected by sonographic assessment among the rural indigenous population in Peninsula Malaysia and its association with anthropometric and biochemical factors. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out from January 2014-February 2016. Subjects were recruited among indigenous peninsula Malaysia population in rural villages, aged ≥18 years old. The survey was questionnaire-based followed by anthropometric and blood parameters measurements. All subjects underwent abdominal ultrasound assessment to screen for the presence of NAFLD. Semi-quantitative visual grading was performed to assess for mild, moderate or severe NAFLD. Results: A total of 270 subjects underwent the screening program (mean age 43.3 ±14.0 years). Approximately 53 subjects (19.6 %) were identified with NAFLD. Of those with NAFLD, approximately 83% had moderate grade of fatty liver and the remainder were diagnosed with mild grade. NAFLD was closely associated with age, body mass index (BMI), central obesity, hypertension, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride/high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio. On multivariate logistic regression, a high BMI (≥23.0 kg/m2), central obesity, and raised TG/HDL-C ratio were independent risk factors for developing NAFLD. Conclusion: This pioneer study defines the prevalence of NAFLD among rural indigenous population in Peninsula Malaysia. Lifestyle-related diseases, such as NAFLD can affect both rural and urban communities with equal severity. High BMI, central obesity, and elevated TG/HDL-C ratio were independent risk factors for developing NAFLD.

This study was designed to assess the fear regarding health professionals basedon a small scale designed focusing on scoring system and assess having some avoidance behavior.Methods: It was a cross-sectional study design. Between July and September 2019, a self-administered questionnaire wasdistributed through online after getting data regarding contacts details of health professionals. We have approached 600subjects in total, these participants were doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals. This health professional’s works allover the country (e.g., Ministry of Health, ministry centers, university, and private sectors). The inclusion criteria were all healthprofessionals work as registered health professionals. The Research Ethics Committee of the university approved the study.Results: The results depict out of total, 26.2% of male and 26.4% of female have high FEAR scores, and 29% of male havelow FEAR score in comparison to 18.4% of female. Health-care providers with bachelor show the highest FEAR score about27.7%, while those with postgraduate degrees show the lowest fear with 22.2%. A bivariate logistic regression analysis doneshows a statistically significant (P = 0.027) association seen with high fear score and age group, especially the youngestbetween 19 and 30 years and educational level (P = 0.024). Whereas, no statistically significant difference (P = 0.290) seen inthe FEAR score with working experience. No statistically significant difference (P = 0.251) seen in the FEAR score with living.Conclusion: Conclusively, the health professionals have fear about researches so need to assess its reasons for the rectificationof the problem.

ABSTRACT

Nabumetone is used to reduce the pain and inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. In the current study, immunomodulatory effect of Nabumetone is investigated in mice. The control group was administered normal saline orally as placebo. Nabumetone was administered orally via gavage in two treatment groups at 14mg/kg.b.w. doses and 28mg/kgb.w., respectively. Haemagglutination (HA) assay, Jerne hemolytic plaque and mice lethality assays were applied. In HA assay, the titer was significantly decreased in Nabumetone treatment groups (P< 0.001). In Jerne hemolytic plaque formation assay, there was a significant reduction (P< 0.001) in number of plaques in Nabumetone treated groups when compared with control. In mice lethality assay, there was a significant difference in mortality ratio of mice in control and Nabumetone treated groups (P< 0.001). Therefore, it is concluded that Nabumetone suppresses the humoral immune response in mice.(AU)


A nabumetona é usada na redução da dor e inflamação da artrite reumática. No presente estudo, o efeito imunomodulador é investigado em camundongos. O grupo de controle recebeu solução salina via oral como placebo. Nabumetona foi administrada oralmente via gavagem em dois grupos de tratamentos com doses de 14mg/kg.b.w. e 28mg/kgb.w., respectivamente. Foram realizados ensaios de hemaglutinação (HA), placa hemolítica de Jerne e letalidade dos camundongos. No ensaio HA, o grau foi significativamente menor nos grupos de tratamento com nabumetoma (P< 0.001). No ensaio de formação de placa hemolítica de Jerne houve redução significativa (P< 0.001) no número de placas em grupos tratados com nabumetoma comparado ao controle. No ensaio de letalidade dos camundongos houve diferença significativa no grau de mortalidade de camundongos no grupo de controle e grupos tratados com nabumetoma (P< 0.001). Portanto, conclui-se que a Nabumetoma suprime a resposta imune humoral em camundongos.(AU)

@#Background: Malaysia continues to have a very low cadaveric organ donation rate of 0.48 per million population. The aim of this paper is to assess the attitude, beliefs and knowledge of patients and relatives at three different hospitals in Negeri Sembilan towards organ donation to increase the acceptability of organ transplant. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with convenient sampling was carried out Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar, Hospital Port Dickson and Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Najihah in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The participants answered a questionnaire regarding the source of their information about organ donation, their knowledge about brain death and willingness to donate. The association between variables was tested using chi-squared test or Fischer’s exact test as appropriate. Results: A total of 385 individuals completed the survey of whom 134 (35%) were willing to donate their organs upon death and 25(19%) were registered donors. Higher educational level (41%), age 30 and below (42%) and people who attended organ donation awareness campaigns (60%) were more willing to donate their organs. Correct understanding of brain death was associated with willingness to be an organ donor. The commonest reason cited for unwillingness to donate was opposition from family members. Conclusion: Marital status, religion, source of knowledge and occupation are significant factors in willingness to donate organs among Malaysians. Lower age and higher educational level were positive factors towards organ donation. Direct personal contact through awareness campaigns, family and friends has a potential for greater positive impact on organ donation.

@# The sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi is an important disease-bearing vector. Five entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) – Steinernema carpocapsae DD136, Steinernema sp. (SII), S. carpocapsae all, S. abbasi, and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora HP88 – were applied as biocontrol agents against the late third instar larvae of P. papatasi. In addition, the effect of toxin complexes (TCs) of Xenorhabdus nematophila and Photorhabdus luminescens laumondii bacteria was evaluated. Results revealed that S. carpocapsae DD136 was the most virulent species followed by Steinernema sp. (SII) and S. carpocapsae all where LC50 were 472, 565, 962 IJs/ml, respectively. Also, the crude TCs were slightly more active and toxic than their fractionated protein. Histopathological examination of infected larvae with H. bacteriophora HP88 showed negative effect on their midgut cells. In conclusion, EPNs with their symbiotic bacteria are more effective as biocontrol agents than the crude or fractionated TCs against sand fly larvae.

ABSTRACT

Lomefloxacin is a flouroquinolone antibiotic that is quite efficacious against many gram negative and gram positive pathogens. Lomefloxacin evince antibacterial effects by modifying DNA gyrase in gram negative pathogens and topoisomerase IV in gram positive pathogens. This study is designed to assess the immunomodulatory effects of lomefloxacin in male albino mice. Three doses of lomefloxacin 12.5 mg/kg, 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg were used and delayed type hypersensitivity assay, cyclophosphamide induced neutropenic assay, carbon clearance assay, heamagglutination assay and mice lethality test were performed to evaluate the effects of lomefloxacin on immune system of mice. DTH assay has depicted the significant immunosuppressant potential of lomefloxacin at 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg dose. Total leukocyte count have exhibited highly significant reduction (P<0.001) in leukocyte count after cyclophosphamide administration. Differential leukocyte count has shown significant (P<0.01) reduction in lymphocyte count, whereas, highly significant (P<0.001) increase in monocyte count and significant (P<0.05) increase neutrophil count has been observed. In carbon clearance assay, highly significant (P<0.01) increase in phagocytic index has been noted at 12.5 mg/kg and 25 mg/kg doses. Humoral immune system responses are suppressed in dose dependent manner by both heamagglutination assay (P<0.001) and mice lethality assay (P<0.001). Results clearly depict that lomefloxacin possess quite significant immunomodulatory potential

BACKGROUND: Soil salinity causes huge economic losses to agriculture productivity in arid and semiarid areas world-wide. The affected plants face disturbances in osmotic adjustment, nutrient transport, ionic toxicity and reduced photosynthesis. Conventional breeding approaches produce little success in combating various stresses in plants. However, non-conventional approaches, such as in vitro tissue culturing, produce genetic variability in the development of salt-tolerant plants, particularly in woody trees. RESULTS: Embryogenic callus cultures of the date palm cultivar Khalas were subjected to various salt levels ranging from 0 to 300 mM in eight subcultures. The regenerants obtained from the salt-treated cultures were regenerated and evaluated using the same concentration of NaCl with which the calli were treated. All the salt-adapted (SA) regenerants showed improved growth characteristics, physiological performance, ion concentrations and K+/Na+ ratios than the salt non-adapted (SNA) regenerants and the control. Regression between the leaf Na+ concentration and net photosynthesis revealed an inverse nonlinear correlation in the SNA regenerants. Leaf K+ contents and stomatal conductance showed a strong linear relationship in SA regenerants compared with the inverse linear correlation, and a very poor coefficient of determination in SNA regenerants. The genetic fidelity of the selected SA regenerants was also tested using 36 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers, of which 26 produced scorable bands. The primers generated 1-10 bands, with an average of 5.4 bands per RAPD primer; there was no variation between SA regenerants and the negative control. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of the variants generated from salt-stressed cultures and their potential adaptation to salinity in date palm cv. Khalas. The massive production of salt stress-adapted date palm plants may be much easier using the salt adaptation approach. Such plants can perform better during exposure to salt stress compared to the non-treated date palm plants.
