ABSTRACT

This study had been carried out in psychiatric department of Zagazig University Hospital and Al Azazy Mental Hospital with the aim of studying the association between serum testosterone levels and aggression in some psychiatric disorders. 24 schizophrenics and Substance abusing who presented to the outpatient clinic with aggressire behaviour were subjected to the following; DSMII, R and clinical diagnosis, Brown aggressive scale and also measurement of free and total testosterone and sexhormone binding globulin [SHBG] by radioimmuno- assay and Enzyme immuno- assay teahniques. The results showed that substance abusing males had significautly higher serum levels of total and free testosterone than schizophrenics and controls. Also among schizophrenics the serum level of this hormone decreased significantly more with age compared to the other two groups, and correlated negatively with the duration of neuropleptic drug usage. The results also showed that the aggressive behavior of the schizophrenics were significantly lower than that of the drug abusing subjects, however there was no significant correlations between serum testosterone levels and the intenesity of aggression in either the schizophrenics or the substance abusing subjects

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the presentation of primary open angle glaucoma in hospital admission. Design: Two hundred thirty three glaucoma patients were admitted from January 1995 to April 1996, where 74 patients were primary open angle glaucoma type. Setting: Department of Ophthalmology Unit 1, Eye Hospital, Liaquat Medical College Jamshoro, Hyderabad. Seventy four patients of primary open angle glaucoma. Main outcome measures: Primary open angle glaucoma [POAG] patients presented for treatment in advanced stage of optic nerve head damage. Of the 223 glaucomas, 74 patients had POAG. Of the 74 patients, 31 [41.89%] were male and 43 [58.10%] female. Eight [10.8 1%] of the 74 patients were below 40 years age while all others were above 40 years age. Seven [5.40%] of the 148 eyes had intraocular pressure [I.O.P.] near 20 mmHg, while rest of eyes had I.O.P. above 21 mmHg. Thirty [20.27%] eyes of the 148 eyes had glaucomatous optic atrophy. Majority of primary open angle glaucoma patients presented for their treatment at very late stage. Out of the 148 eyes, 54 eyes were in advanced [.8 and.9 cup disc ratio] stage of optic disc cupping and 30 eyes had complete glaucomatous optic atrophy

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the achievement of visual acuity and incidence of postoperative complications in extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implant. One hundred five cataract patients underwent extracapsular cataract extraction [E.C.C.E] with intraocular Lens [IOL] Implant from May 1994 to June 1996. Department of Ophthalmology, Unit-1, Eye Hospital, Liaquat Medical College Jamshoro/ Hyderabad. One hundred five cataract patients. Extracapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens implant achieved best quality of vision with low incidence of postoperative complications. Of the 105 cataract patients 88.5% achieved visual acuity of 6/6 - 6/12. Postoperative complications were 3.80% corneal oedema, 3.80% herpes simplex keratitis, 2.85% secondary glaucoma, 0.95% Retinal Detachment, 2.85% Toxic Suture Syndrome, 0.95% cystoid macular oedema and 2.85% had thickening of posterior capsule. One hundred five cataract patients underwent extracapsular cataract extraction with I.O.L. Implant, 88.5% achieved visual acuity of 6/6 - 6/12 with low incidence of postoperative complications

ABSTRACT

This study was done on sixteen [16] non insulin dependent diabetics without atherosclerosis and sixteen [16] noninsulin dependent diabetics with atherosclerosis in addition to sixteen [16] normal controls. In this study we found that: [A] NIDD patients without atherosclerosis compared to controls. Serum chromium and APOAl showed non-significant change. Total cholesterol showed a significant increase. HDL-cholesterol showed a significant decrease. B. NIDD patients with atherosclerosis as compared to controls. - Serum chromium and HDL-cho1esterol showed a significant decrease. - APO A -l showed non-significant change. - Total cholesterol showed a significant increase. C. NIDD patients with atherosclerosis as compared to those without atherosclerosis. - Serum chromium and APO Al showed non-significant change. - Total cholesterol showed a significant increase - HDL-cholesterol showed a significant decrease
