Effect of strenuous exercise on urinary protein excretion

To test the phenomenon that proteinuria in normal, adult following strenuous exercise is reversible within 24 hours. Design: Before-after comparison. Participants: Thirty [18 men and 12 women] Medical students of the University of Mosul volunteered to participate in the study. Main outcome measures: The participants were submitted to progressive cycle ergometer for 30 minutes. Urine samples before and after exercise were analyzed for protein and creatinine in urine. There is significant difference between 1 hour post exercise and pre exercise urinary protein creatinine ratio. However, there is no significant difference between 24 hours post exercise and pre exercise urinary protein creatinine ratio. Exercise can induce proteinuria that is predominantly of glomerular origin. This phenomenon is transient

Serum uric in normal and preeclamptic pregnant women

To monitor the pattern of changes in serum uric acid in the second and third trimesters during pregnancy and to evaluate the importance of serum uric acid in the management of preeclampsia. Design: Descriptive case series study of women with normal pregnancy and women with preeclampsia. Setting: Al-Batool Teaching Maternity Hospital in Mosul during a period of one year from October 1996 to October 1997. Participants: Eighty-seven women with normal pregnancy and 111 pregnant women with preeclampsia. Main outcome measures: The mean +/- SD values of serum uric acid were [3.33 +/- 1.29] and [5.09 +/- 2.29] mg/dl of normal and preeclamptic pregnant women respectively: A highly statistical significant difference in mean value of serum uric acid is shown between preeclamptic pregnant and normal pregnant women [p < 0.001. Serum uric acid in the second trimester was lower than the third trimester both in normal pregnant women and preeciamptic women but the difference is not statistically significant Serum uric acid is significantly higher in preeclamptic pregnant women. Monitoring uric acid level during the management of preeclamptic patients is advised

Sexually transmitted urethritis in male patients: a clinical bacteriological study

Sexually transmitted urethritis in males is caused by many organisms, 59 male patients were examined to elucidate the etiological agents. Different types of organisms were detected, and serological scar of chlamydial infection was detected in the cases examined. Neisseria gonorrhea was detected in 12 cases [20.34 percent], Non gonococcal [other bacteria] were detected in 17 cases [28.81 percent], chlamydia was detected in 3 cases [5.08 percent], bacterial flora was detected in 22 cases [37.29 percent] and no organism was recorded in 5 cases [8.48 percent]. All the cases showed >5 PMN/HPF urine samples. High serum antichlamydial antibody titre was detected in 66.67 percent of Gonococcal cases, 5.88 percent of non gonococcal cases, 100 percent in chlamydial cases, and in 48.15 percent of cases with bacterial flora. This study supports the previous studies for treating cases of GU and NGU for chlamydia as well because of co-infection

Clinical assessment of non-sedating histamine H1 antagonists in treating patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria

Chronic idiopathic urticaria is a major problem in every day practice. H1 antagonist anti-histamines are the drugs of choice for its symptomatic treatment. The ordinary sedating anti-histamines are replaced by the non-sedating group. Terfenadine Astemizole and Loratadine are members of this group. The three drugs were assessed in an open label study for 4 weeks in treating 80 patients with chronic urticaria who completed the study. It came to the conclusion that the 3 drugs have significant effects in controlling the pruritus in different degrees. Loratadine was proved to be superior than Astemizole in efficacy but the difference was not statistically significant, P = 0.46. Both Loratadine and Astemizole were superior than Terfenadine in efficacy with a significant statistical difference, P < 09.05 for Astemizole/Terfenadine. No side reactions were reported in patients taking Loratadine and Astemizole, but only one patient [4%] in the Terfenadine group had dry mouth and one patient [4%] had eye irritation

Road traffic accidents in Saddam city-1983

In the first quarter of the year 1983 there were 305 road traffic accidents [RTA] in Saddam City. The number of people injuried in those accidents were 144 persons, in, which 47.8% were below 14 years of age. 79.9% of the accidents were runover, the highest percentage [35.3%] of the accidents occur among governmental cars, 34% of the drivers were in the army services at the time of accidents. The number of accidents varies during the hours of the day but there was no appearent differences between the number of accidents among the days of the week. Also there were differences between the age of drivers for the occurrence of RTA but such differences did not exist between the age of injured persons
