ABSTRACT

The search for novel antibiotics is of immense importance in research areas around the world for agricultural,pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. The Streptomyces species are widely used as an importantbiological tool for the production of a wide range of novel secondary metabolites. In the present study, isolatedstrain RSA-14 from rhizosphere soil of Alternanthera sessilis was subjected to morphological, physiological,biochemical and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The isolated RSA-14 was analyzed for antimicrobialactivities by cross streak method and exhibited a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against test pathogens.The isolate was tested for the ability to grow in the presence of antibiotics, such as penicillin, streptomycin,chloramphenicol, gentamycin, and tetracycline and resistant to only two antibiotics, and sensitive to others. The16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing and analysis of the phylogenetic tree showed 100% sequence similaritywith Streptomyces cinereoruber strain P.B.373.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, Pseudoxanthomonas species were isolated from rhizosphere soil samples of two selected medicinalplants, such as Alternenthera sessilis Linn. and Leucas aspera (Wild) Linn., which were collected from agriculturalfields at Kundagol, Dharwad, Karnataka. Pseudoxanthomonas sp. is Gram negative, aerobic, motile, non-spore formingrod shaped bacterium and it was designated as Pseudoxanthomonas strain RSA-23; it was found to possess broadspectrum of antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms. Furthermore, the most potent strain RSA-23was characterized by physiological, biochemical, and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. The 16S ribosomal RNAgene sequencing and analysis of phylogenetic tree showed 100% sequence similarity with Pseudoxanthomonas indica(KT204489). The methanol extract of Pseudoxanthomonas strain RSA-23 was analyzed through UV-spectroscopy andFourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The UV-Vis. spectra revealed the presence of indole and the presenceof different functional groups, such as aldehydes, amines, and alkyl halides, were indicated by FTIR spectra.

ABSTRACT

Background: Skeletal trauma accounts for 10-15% of all childhood injuries. The increasing incidence of fractures in children mainly attributed to increased road traffi c accidents and sports participation. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted from October 2012 to April 2015 at Terna Medical College, Navi Mumbai. A 28 pediatric patients (20 male and 8 female), who came to emergency department with long bone fractures subsequently, underwent surgical fi xation of long bones by titanium elastic nailing (TENS) were included in this prospective study. Results: Road traffi c accident was the main mode of injuries. The most common long bone fracture was femur 40% and 60% tibia fracture. Pattern of fracture 33.3% transverse, 13.3% commiunited, 20% oblique, 26.7% spira, 6.7% segmental. The level of fracture 80% middle third. The time interval between trauma and surgery was average 3.65 days. Average duration in 50.20 min. Average duration of immobilization is 7.2 weeks. Duration of stay in hospital was 10.25 days. Time of union is 10.35 weeks. Time of weight bearing in the present study is 11.8 weeks. Follow-up done for period of 24 weeks. According to Flynn’s criteria, 89% of patients were excellent and 11% satisfi ed; no patients reported their outcome as not satisfi ed. Conclusion: TENS is the method of choice for the management of long bone fractures in children, because its elastic mobility promoting rapid union at fractures site, stability ideal for early mobilization. It gives lower complication rate, good outcome. It allows an early functional and cast-free follow-up, quick pain reduction compared plating technique including a minimally invasive technique. A less time-consuming procedure and easier metal work removal, cosmetically a small scar. Our study results provide new evidence that expands the inclusion criteria for this treatment and shows that TENS can be successfully used regardless of fracture location and fracture pattern.

ABSTRACT

Juvenile amytrophic lateral sclerosis (JALS) is a type of motor neuron disease presenting before 25 years of age. It is characterized by a combination of upper and lower motor signs. It may be familial or sporadic. We are reporting a sporadic case of JALS with onset of symptoms at 4 years of age. Diagnostic criteria and a brief review of literature are presented.

ABSTRACT

A seven month male child presented with midline neck swelling which was visible in the suprasternal notch when the child cried. Computed tomography revealed that it was thymic tissue (solid). There was no thymic tissue in the normal position. Undesended thymus or ectopic thymus is a rare cause of neck mass. Solid type as seen in this case constitute 10% of ectopic thymic tissue ,90% being of cystic variety. Caution should be exercised in excision of such masses as they may be the only thymic tissue.
