ABSTRACT

This paper compared the differences between two kinds of Bufonis Venenum produced by Bufo gargarizans gargarizans and B. gararizans andrewsi, and verified the rationality of the market value orientation of Bufonis Venenum based on the zebrafish mo-del. Twenty batches of Bufonis Venenum from Jiangsu province, Hebei province, Liaoning province, Jilin province, and Liangshan, Sichuan province, including B. gargarizans gargarizans and B. gararizans andrewsi, were collected. The UHPLC-LTQ-Orbitrap-MS combined with principal component analysis was used to compare the differences between two kinds of Bufonis Venenum. According to the limiting conditions of VIP>1, FC<0.5 or FC>2.0, and peak total area ratio>1%, 9 differential markers were determined, which were cinobufagin, cinobufotalin, arenobufagin, resibufogenin, scillaredin A, resibufagin, 3-(N-suberoylargininyl)-arenobufagin, 3-(N-suberoylargininyl)-marinobufagin, and 3-(N-suberoylargininyl)-resibufogenin. The content of 20 batches of Bufonis Venenum was determined according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia(2020 edition) by high-performance liquid chromatography, and the 2 batches of Bufonis Venenum, CS7(8.99% of total content) and CS9(5.03% of total content), with the largest difference in the total content of the three quality control indexes of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia(bufalin, cinobufagin, and resibufogenin) were selected to evaluate their anti-liver tumor activity based on the zebrafish model. The tumor inhibition rates of the 2 batches were 38.06% and 45.29%, respectively, proving that only using the quality control indexes of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia as the value orientation of Bufonis Venenum market circulation was unreasonable. This research provides data support for the effective utilization of Bufonis Venenum resources and the establishment of a rational quality evaluation system of Bufonis Venenum.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the impact of activities of daily living (ADL) on depression in the elderly and the role of social networks and children's support. Methods: Data used in this study were obtained as participants aged 60 and above from the "China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey 2018",with a sample size of 10 215. ADL, social network and depression were measured on scales. The moderated mediation model was used to analyze the role of social networks and children's support. The SPSS 25.0 software was used for statistical analysis, the PROCESS 3.3 macro program was used to test the moderated mediation effect. Results: A total of 10 760 participants aged 60 and above were included. Activities of daily living showed a direct impact on depression in the elderly (β=-0.090, P<0.01), with social network playing a mediating role (β=0.035, P<0.01; β=-0.064, P<0.05) and children's support played a moderating role (β=-0.029, P<0.05) in the relationship between the elderly's ADL and depression. Conclusions: The social network is an essential buffer to declining ADL's negative impact on depression of older adults. Children's support is a powerful supplement to enhance social networks' positive role and reduce the risk of elderly depression. Exerting the combined advantages of social networks and children's support are important ways to maintain the elderly's mental health.

ABSTRACT

To provide the ancient literary evidence support for the clinical application and development of classical prescription based on systematical collection and analysis of the ancient Chinese medical literature containing Jinshui Liujun Jian, including its origin and development. Bibliometric analysis was used and information of Jinshui Liujun Jian in ancient Chinese medical literature was then collected for statistical analysis of formula compositions, main indications, dosage, preparation methods, etc. A total of 151 valid items of data were obtained from 48 ancient Chinese medicine books. Jinshui Liujun Jian was first recorded in Jingyue Quanshu written by ZHANG Jiebin. This prescription consisted of Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Pinelliae Rhizome, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, Poria and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizome Praeparata cum Melle, and it was mainly used to treat the deficiency of lung and kidney, edema and excess production of phlegm, or Yin deficiency in the old, insufficient blood-qi, wind-cold evil, cough and disgusting, asthma and excessive phlegm. Doctors in later dynasties mostly followed the prescription compositions, dosages and indications in Jingyue Quanshu, and extended the clinical application of this prescription.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>INTRODUCTION</b>The benefits of extended inpatient rehabilitation following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in local community hospitals (CHs) are unproven. Our study compared functional outcomes between patients discharged home and to CHs following TKA.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A case-control study was conducted of patients undergoing primary unilateral TKA. Consecutive patients (n = 1,065) were retrospectively reviewed using the Knee Society Clinical Rating System (KSCRS), 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Oxford Knee Score (OKS) preoperatively, and at the six-month and two-year follow-ups.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Overall, 967 (90.8%) patients were discharged home and 98 (9.2%) to CHs. CH patients were older (mean age 70.7 vs. 67.2 years; p < 0.0001), female (86.7% vs. 77.5%; p = 0.0388) and less educated (primary education and above: 61.7% vs. 73.8%; p = 0.0081). Median CH length of stay was 23.0 (range 17.0-32.0) days. Significant predictors of discharge destination were older age, female gender, lower education, and poorer ambulatory status and physical health. Preoperatively, CH patients had worse KSCRS Function (49.2 ± 19.5 vs. 54.4 ± 16.8; p = 0.0201), SF-36 Physical Functioning (34.3 ± 22.6 vs. 40.4 ± 22.2; p = 0.0017) and Social Functioning (48.2 ± 35.1 vs. 56.0 ± 35.6; p = 0.0447) scores. CH patients had less improvement for all scores at all follow-ups. Regardless of preoperative confounders, with repeated analysis of variance, discharge destination was significantly associated with KSCRS, SF-36 and OKS scores.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Older, female and less educated patients with poorer preoperative functional scores were more likely to be discharged to CHs after TKA. At the two-year follow-up, patients in CHs had less improvement in functional outcomes than those discharged home.</p>

ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the active components of the Chinese medicine formula Shenqi San (SS) by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detector and electrospray ionization-hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrum (HPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS),and demonstrate the anticancer mechanism of SS on human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells by evaluating the cell proliferation and apoptosis induction.The chloroform extraction of SS (CE-SS) was extracted from SS,while HPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS assay was performed to identify components of CE-SS.MTT assay was used to quantify the proliferation of A549 cells with the treatment of CE-SS.Apoptosis analysis was carried out by detecting phosphatidylserine (PS) externalization using the Annexin V-FITC Apoptosis Detection Kit and the stained cells were analyzed with a flow cytometer.DAPI staining assay was carried out to observe morphological characteristics of apoptotic cells.Western blotting was used to detect the expression of important signaling proteins including caspase-3,-8,-9,p53,Bax and Bcl-2.Eight compounds were identified through HPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS analysis and 3-pyridine carboxylic acid,barbatin C,scutebarbatine F and barbatine D might be the main compounds responsible for the antitumor effect of CE-SS.CE-SS suppressed the proliferation of lung cancer A549 cells in a time-and dose-dependent manner.By Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining,we found that treatment with CE-SS induced apoptosis in A549 cells.After 24-h exposure to CE-SS,the expression of cleaved-caspase-9,cleaved-caspase-8 and cleaved-caspase-3 protein was activated,the expression of p53 protein increased while the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 also increased.This study identified the eight compounds of CE-SS,and demonstrated their anticancer effect on human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells via induction of apoptosis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to evaluate predictors of good outcomes following medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) in Asian patients. METHODS: Registry data of patients who underwent primary unilateral medial UKA from 2006 to 2011 were collected. Outcomes studied were the Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and the Physical Component Score (PCS) of the Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaire. These outcome scores were collected prospectively, pre- and postoperatively up to 5 years. Good outcome was defined as an overall improvement in score greater than or equal to the minimal clinically important difference (MCID). The MCID for the OKS was 5 while the MCID for the PCS was 10. Regression analysis was used to identify predictors of good outcomes following medial UKA. RESULTS: Primary medial UKA was performed in 1,075 patients. Higher (poorer) preoperative OKS (odds ratio [OR], 1.27; p < 0.001), lower (poorer) preoperative PCS (OR, 1.08; p < 0.001), lower (poorer) preoperative Knee Society Knee Score (KSKS; OR, 1.02; p < 0.001) and higher (better) preoperative SF-36 Mental Component Score (MCS; OR, 1.02; p < 0.001) were significant predictors of good outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with poorer OKS, PCS and KSKS and better SF-36 MCS preoperatively tended to achieve good outcomes by the MCID criterion at 5 years following the index surgery.

ABSTRACT

Objective·To investigate the characteristics of fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings of patients with uveitis. Methods·The clinical data of 84 patients (135 eyes) diagnosed as uveitis in Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from Apr 2015 to Aug 2017 were studied retrospectively. FFA and OCT examinations were performed. Results·Of 84 patients, the average age was (44±10) years old. There were more males than females. Fifty-one patients (102 eyes) were affected bilaterally, and 33 patients (33 eyes) were affected unilaterally. Optic fluorescence leakage was found in 73% of patients, and retinal vascular wall staining was found in 50% of patients by FFA. Cystoid macular edema was found in 23% of patients, and neuroepithelial detachment was found in 21% of patients by OCT. The proportion of common positive manifestation by OCT (10%–40%) was lower than that by FFA (23%–100%) (χ2=33.8, P=0.000). Conclusion·The uveitis usually occurs in young and middle-aged male patients. The most common features of the uveitis patients are optic fluorescence leakage and retinal vascular wall staining by FFA, and cystoid macular edema and neuroepithelial detachment by OCT.

BACKGROUND: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) has been widely applied in the treatment of anterior-medial osteoarthritis of the knee and is widely recognized as one of the most effective treatments.OBJECTIVE: To explore the short-term efficacy of UKA for anterior-medial unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: Clinical data of 42 patients (48 knees) with anterior-medial unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis undergoing UKA in Heping Hospital Affiliated to Changzhi Medical College from May 2014 to May 2016 were analyzed retrospectively. The preoperative and postoperative last follow-up Hospital for Special Surgery, the Knee Society Score, Western Ontario and Macmaster scores, as well as the range of motion of the knee were compared through clinic reexamination or telephones to evaluate the short-term efficacy. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The follow-up time was 6-24 months. (2) The pain of the medial knee joint was relieved in different degrees, and there were significant differences in the Hospital for Special Surgery, the Knee Society Score, Western Ontario and Macmaster scores, as well as the range of motion of the knee between preoperation and postoperation (P < 0.05). (3) No lower limb deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, infection, meniscus dislocation or prosthesis loosening occurred. (4) To conclude, UKA exhibits less trauma, rapid recovery and less complications in the treatment of anterior-medial unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis, which obtains good short-term efficacy, and its long-term efficacy needs to be studied in depth.

ABSTRACT

Objective To develop a new mPCR method for rapid diagnosis of six types of encephalitis causing viruses of HS-VI,HSVII,VZV,EBV,EV71 and CMV.Methods Six pairs of specific primers for CMV,EV71,HSV I,VZV,EBV and HSV II were designed.The mPCR detection method was established and the sensitivity was detected.In order to verify the clinical application value of their multiplex PCR system,fifteen cerebrospinal fluid specimens of clinically suspected VE from the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from 2014 to 2015 were examined by the mPCR method.Results The 6 pairs of primers did not interfere with each other,and the sensitivity of the mPCR system was over 103copies/μl.Among 15 cerebrospinal fluid specimens from patients with suspected viral encephalitis,six specimens(6/15,40%)were tested positive by the mPCR.Among them,HSV I was 5 and CMV was 1.Conclusion The mPCR method for detecting six types of en-cephalitis-associated virus at same time was established with high specificity,sensitivity and stability.

ABSTRACT

Background: To identify the critical amino acid residues that contribute to the high enzyme activity and good thermostability of Yersinia enterocolitica subsp. palearctica (Y. NSN), 15 mutants of Y. NSN were obtained by site-directed mutagenesis in this study. And their enzyme activity and thermostability were assayed. Effect of several factors on the enzyme activity and thermostability of Y. NSN, was also investigated. Results: The results showed that the I203F and D264E mutants retained approximately 75% and 70% enzyme activity, respectively, compared to the wild-type enzyme. In addition to the I203F and D264E mutants, the mutant E202A had an obvious influence on the thermostability of Y. NSN. According to the analysis of enzyme activity and thermostability of Y. NSN, we found that Glu202, Ile203 and Asp264 might be the key residues for its high enzyme activity and good thermostability. Conclusions: Among all factors affecting enzyme activity and thermostability of Y. NSN, they failed to explain the experimental results well. One reason might be that the enzyme activity and thermostability of Y. NSN were affected not only by a single factor but also by the entire environment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: To date, there is no study comparing outcomes between post-total knee replacement genu recurvatum and fixed flexion. This study aims to provide data that will help in deciding which side to err on when neutral extension is not achieved. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of primary total knee arthroplasties was performed, which compared the 6-month and 2-year clinical outcomes between fixed flexion and genu recurvatum deformities at 6 months. RESULTS: At 6 months, knees in genu recurvatum did better than knees in fixed flexion deformity in terms of knee flexion. However, at 2 years, knees in fixed flexion deformity did better in terms of knee scores and showed better improvement in the degree of deformity. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that it is better to err on the side of fixed flexion deformity if neutral alignment cannot be achieved.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of urinary incontinence (UI) among perimenopausal women in Wuhan. A cross-sectional survey was performed on 1067 women aged 40-65 years sampled in Wuhan urban area from April to October 2014. Information about demographic characteristics, menstruation, parity and UI symptoms was collected using a questionnaire. The data were evaluated by Chi-square test and multiple Logistic regression analysis. The prevalence rate of UI was 37.2%, with stress UI (32.2%) being more prevalent than urgency UI (21.6%) and mixed UI (16.6%). 31.2% women with UI stated that UI had negative impact on their life. Risk factors for UI included menstrual disorder, menopause, overweight, perineal laceration, atrophic vaginitis, constipation and pelvic organ prolapse. Appropriate investigation apropos the factors associated with UI should be performed to diminish its impact on women's life.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the effect of different bone defect types on stress distributions of the implant- bone interface and bone-Bio-oss interface under dynamic loads by finite element method. Methods The finite element models for four types of bone defects (fenestrative bone defect, dehiscent bone defect, circular bone defect, vertical bone defect) without the first molars were established, then the models of grafting bone and implants corresponding to each model were established. The vertical load of 100 N and Oblique load of 200 N were used to simulate the dynamic chewing process of 5 stages in a masticatory cycle, and the maximum Von Mises stresses at the implant-bone interface and bone-Bio-oss interface were analyzed. Results In a masticatory cycle, from stage 2 to stage 4, the stresses on implant-bone interface increased by 81.6%, 90.7%, 182%, 106%, respectively, while the stresses on Bio-oss bone and natural bone interface increased by 26%, 13%, 6%, 56.25%, respectively. Conclusions The sequence of bone graft stability for the models with four types of bone defects is: circular bone defect> dehiscent bone defect>fenestrative bone defect>vertical bone defects. In clinic, doctors should screen the high-risk patients according to the sites of the bone grafts, and choose different methods for fixing the bone grafts so as to improve the stability of bone grafting. The axial loading will be more beneficial to the stress distributions on the interface, and the oblique loading should be decreased or avoided in clinical design for the superstructure of implant denture.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the variation in pharmacokinetics of berberine in the brain tissue of rats under the conditions of compound compatibility with geniposide and baicalin or the primary formula HuanglianJiedu Decoction (HJD). Methods: The rats were divided into three groups including berberine group (247.39 mg/kg), compound combination group (berberine, geniposide, and baicalin of 247.39, 130.11, and 113.01 mg/kg) and HJD group (HJD 3.92 g/kg and berberine 247.39 mg/kg). After ig administration of those compounds or formula, the brain tissues of rats were collected immediately at 0.083, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24 h respectively. The brain tissue was taken from the six rats in each group. A sensitive UPLC-MS method was developed for determining the concentration of berberine in the brain tissue of rats. The concentration-time curve was plotted and the pharmacokinetic parameters of rats in each group were calculated by DAS 2.0 software. Results: These results showed that the Cmax (368.59 ng/g) of berberine in rats with compound combination was increased compared with those with berberine alone (Cmax 108.01 ng/g), which is pronouncedly larger than the Cmax (31.97 ng/g) of berberine in the HJD group. Meanwhile, the AUC0-∞ of berberine in the compound combination group was 3 236.60 min∙ng/g which was much greater than the AUC0-∞ in rat brain with berberine (2 701.37 min∙ng/g) or HJD (420.34 min∙ng/g). Conclusion: The combination of geniposide and baicalin could promote the concentration of berberine, while the primary formula HJD could decrease the distribution of berberine in the brain tissue of rats.

ABSTRACTIn this work, the mixture of alginate and soy protein isolate used as a wall material was developed to encapsulateEnterococcus faecalis HZNU P2 (E. faecalis HZNU P2). The survival ability in the simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and bile salt solution, storage stability at different temperatures and release properties in the simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) of encapsulated cells were assessed. The results showed that encapsulation could offer sufficient protection toE. faecalis HZNU P2. The viability of encapsulatedE. faecalis HZNU P2 did not decrease in SGF at pH 2.5 or 2.0 after 2 h incubation, while free cells were reduced from 11 to 9.85 log CFU/mL in SGF (pH 2.5) at the same exposure time. Only minor viability of encapsulatedE. faecalis HZNU P2 lost in 1.0 or 2.0% bile salt solution for 1 or 2 h exposure, compared with no survival of freeE. faecalis HZNU P2 under the same conditions. EncapsulatedE. faecalis HZNU P2 was completely released from the microspheres in SIF within 1 h. The viability of encapsulatedE. faecalisHZNU P2 stored for two weeks at 4°C was fully retained. Viabilities of encapsulatedE. faecalis HZNU P2, 9.6 and 9.0 Log CFU/g were obtained at 25 and 37°C after 21 days storage, respectively. However, around 1.0 log CFU/mL of free cells was reduced after two weeks storage at 4°C. EncapsulatedE. faecalis HZNU P2 using soy protein isolate and alginate as wall materials could play an important role in food applications.

Date is the most popular fruit in middle-east countries. However, the date production process is accompanied by a substantial increase of loss during picking, storage, commercialization and conditioning process. Date and their byproducts have many essential elements for the growth of microorganisms. Thus, they can be converted into value-added compounds through biotechnology. In this paper, date and their processing byproducts used as substrates for producing value-added products such as organic acids, exopolysaccharide, antibiotics, date flavored probiotic fermented dairy, bakery yeast, etc, were reviewed.

ABSTRACT

In this work, alginate-whey protein was used as wall materials for encapsulating Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (L. bulgaricus). The characteristics of encapsulated and free L. bulgaricus showed that the free L. bulgaricus lost viability after 1 min exposure to simulated gastric fluid (SGF) at pH 2.0 and 2.5. However, the viability of encapsulated L. bulgaricus did not decrease in SGF at pH 2.5 for 2 h incubation. The viable numbers of encapsulated L. bulgaricus decreased less than 1.0 log unit for 2 h incubation in SGF at pH 2.0. For bile stability, only 1.2 log units and 2.0 log units viability of the encapsulated L. bulgaricus was lost in 1 and 2% bile for 1 h exposure, respectively, compared with no survival of free L. bulgaricus under the same conditions. Encapsulated L. bulgaricus was completely released from the microspheres in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF, pH 6.8) in 3 h. The viability of the encapsulated L. bulgaricus retained more 8.0 log CFU/g after stored at 4°C for four weeks. However, for free L. bulgaricus, only around 3.0 log CFU/mL was found at the same storage conditions. Results showed that the encapsulation could improve the stability of L. bulgaricus.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>INTRODUCTION</b>The Singapore General Hospital Bone Bank, which exclusively stores femoral head allografts, relies on flash sterilisation to prevent allograft-related disease transmission and wound infection. However, intraosseous temperatures during autoclaving may be lower than required to eliminate human immunodeficiency virus, and hepatitis B and C viruses. The aim of this study is to determine the intraosseous temperatures of femoral head allografts during autoclaving and to assess the adequacy of autoclaving in preventing disease transmission.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Six femoral heads were acquired from patients who underwent hip arthroplasty. The specimens were divided into two groups. The first group underwent flash sterilisation with a sterilisation time of 4 min, while a longer sterilisation time of 22 min was used for the second group.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The highest core temperature in the first group was 130°C, while the core temperatures in the second group plateaued at 133°C for all allografts. In the first group, only smaller allografts maintained temperatures sufficient for the inactivation of the clinically relevant viral pathogens. In contrast, all allografts in the second group were terminally sterilised.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>There is an inverse correlation between the size of allografts and intraosseous temperatures achieved during autoclaving. Therefore, we recommend dividing large allografts into smaller pieces, in order to achieve intraosseous temperatures adequate for the elimination of transmissible pathogens during flash sterilisation. Allografts should not be terminally sterilised, as the resulting allografts will become unusable. Despite modern processing techniques, stringent donor selection remains vital in the effort to prevent allograft-related infections. Autoclaving is an economical and efficacious method of preventing allograft-related disease transmission.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>INTRODUCTION</b>The use of robotics in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been shown to minimise human error, as well as improve the accuracy and precision of component implantation and mechanical axis alignment. The present study aimed to demonstrate that robot-assisted TKA using ROBODOC® is safe and capable of producing a consistent and accurate postoperative mechanical axis.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>We prospectively recruited 27 consecutive patients who underwent robot-assisted TKA between May and December 2012. Two patients were excluded from the study due to intraoperative technical problems with the robot. Long-leg radiography and computed tomography were performed prior to surgery, and used for mechanical axis measurements and component sizing. DigiMatch™ ROBODOC® Surgical System software version 4.3.6 (Curexo Technology Corp, Fremont, CA, USA) was used in all cases to perform bone cuts in accordance with the preoperative plan.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The postoperative coronal mechanical alignment was within 3 degrees, with a mean alignment of -0.4 ± 1.7 degrees, confirming the accuracy of the preoperative surgical plan and bone cuts. The mean operating time was 96 ± 15 min, and preoperative planning yielded 100% implant sizing accuracy.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Robotics has the potential to enable surgeons to consistently attain ideal postoperative alignment. The use of bone movement monitors and an integrated navigation system enhances the safety profile of ROBODOC® by minimising errors. However, the role of the surgeon in TKA is still vital, as the surgeon is ultimately in charge of planning the surgery, its execution and ensuring soft tissue balance during TKA.</p>

The objective of the study was to isolate a novel lectin from Pleurotus ferulae mushrooms and characterize its various biological activities


A novel lectin was extracted with deionized water, precipitated from the aqueous extract using 75% saturated [Nfi] 2


The activity was tested using hemagglutination assays, and carbohydrate-binding specificity was determined by glycan microarray analysis


Its effects on the mitogenic activity of mouse splenocytes were determined by MTT assay. The novel lectin was adsorbed on ion-exchange chromatography DEAE-cellulose and shown as a band with the molecular mass of 17.5 kDa on a SDS-PAGE and as a single 35.0-kDa peak in gel filtration on Superdex G-75


The hemagglutinating activity of the lectin was inhibited by D-glucose, lactose, D-galactose, and galactosamine. The lectin was stable on 60°C


The hemagglutinating activity of lectin was reduced by 50% at 70°C. At 80°C, it was further reduced to 6.25% of its original activity. The hemagglutinating activity was the highest at pH 6-9. Moreover, its hemagglutinating activity was inhibited by Mg[2+] and Ca[2+] ions


The lectin isolated from P. ferulae in the current study possessed highly potent hemagglutinating and proliferative activities toward mouse splenocytes
