Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of arrhythmia. Its incidence and prevalence increase with age. There is increasing evidence that AF is an independent risk factor for cognitive impairment and dementia. This article reviews the possible mechanisms of cognitive impairment and dementia in patients with AF.
