ABSTRACT

São analisadas as causas de morbi-mortalidade entre médicos que exerciam medicina em Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais) no período de 1979 a 1995 A doença isquêmica do coração, aguda ou crônica, representou a principal causa de morte. A seguir tiveram importância, por ordem decrescente, o câncer da próstata, os acidentes de trânsito, a neoplasia de cólon, o enfisema pulmonar. O suicídio representou a nona causa mais frequente de morte nesta população. A taxa de mortalidade natural entre médicos veio reduzindo significativamente com os anos, embora a taxa de mortalidade violenta tenha se mantido relativamente constante e mais elevada quando comparada com a da população geral.


The causes of morbidity and mortality among physicians who worked in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais) are analised in the period between 1979 and 1995. The ischemic heart disease, acute or chronic, is the principal cause of death. After that, by decrescent order, the prostatic cancer, the tratic accidents, the colon cancer, the pulmonary emphysema. The suicide is the ninth most frequent cause of death in this population. The natural death rate among physicians has decreased significantly in the years, however the violent dearh rate has remained relatively constant and more elevated than the general population.
