Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes and is also a long standing national public health problem. This article aims to discover its etiological theories throughout history, the origins of the disease in Brazil, the attempts to combat it and, as an example, the impact of epidemics in the city of Campinas – SP at the end of the nineteenth century.
