ABSTRACT
A escala de orientação religiosa, desenvolvida por Allport, explorou originalmente a ideia de que a religiosidade intrínseca poderia estar inversamente relacionada com comportamentos de preconceito e que a religiosidade extrínseca estaria diretamente relacionada com discriminação racial. Religiosidade intrínseca seria uma expressão de uma personalidade madura, menos propensa a atitudes discriminatórias. Nessa revisão investigamos a origem teórica da escala I/E no livro The individual and his religion, publicado por Allport. Identificamos que a Escala I/E não foi capaz de operacionalizar os conceitos originais do autor, o que resultou em afastamento da ideia de correlação entre desenvolvimento da personalidade e religiosidade. Os autores recuperam a noção de religiosidade como função autônoma integradora do comportamento desenvolvida na dependência do amadurecimento pessoal. Propõem o estudo metódico da interface personalidade-religiosidade com base no conceito de Allport como meio para investigar de que forma a orientação religiosa se relaciona com indicadores de maturidade e saúde mental.
The religious orientation scale, developed by Allport, has explored the initial hypothesis that intrinsic religiousness could be inversely related to prejudice behavior and, on the other hand, extrinsic religiousness would directly correlate with racial discrimination. Intrinsic religiousness might represent the expression of a mature personality, less predisposed to bigotry. In this review the authors investigate the theoretical substract for the I/E Scale in the title The individual and his religion, written by Allport. It is pointed that the I/E Scale did not manage to operationalize the original concepts form its author, which resulted in alienation from the idea that there is a correlation between personality growth and religiosity. The authors engage in recovering the notion of religiosity as an autonomous integrative function of behavior, developed as consequence of personal maturation. They propose a methodic exploration of the interface personality/religiosity based on Allport's concepts as a means to investigate how religious orientation is related to indicators of maturity and mental health.
