ABSTRACT

Various researches have shown that Cluster of Differentiation 44 (CD44) is one of the valued markers. As it plays an important role in tumor growth and metastasis but studies also suggest it as a cancer stem cell (CSC) marker in oral cancer (OC). Therefore, we aimed to explore association between the expression of CD44 and clinicopathological characteristics along with the OC prognosis. We conducted literature search through PubMed database (till October 22, 2020) to determine and evaluate the clinical and prognostic significance of CD44 expression in OC patients. According to the inclusion criteria we finalized 9 studies with 867 OC cases. We found the positive expression of CD44 in advanced stages was prominently associated with reduced survival rate. Our analysis suggest that higher tumor expression of CD44 may predict poor survival in end staged OC patient

ABSTRACT

Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis occurs due to chronic irritation of the peritoneal surface resulting in inflammation and fibrosis. Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis usually occurs in patients requiring peritoneal dialysis (PD); however, it may also occur in liver transplant patients. The fibrosis in encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis could be severe enough to cause small bowel obstruction (SBO). Herein, we report a case of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis secondary to liver transplantation that presented with SBO. The patient was started on Tamoxifen for encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis and evaluated at follow-up without any other intestinal obstruction episodes. This case demonstrates that encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis can occur as a liver transplant complication and present with small bowel obstruction.

ABSTRACT

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is an effective treatment for chronic or recurrent sinusitis, resistant to medical treatment. The endoscopic sinus surgery enables one to have direct visualization of the diseased tissue, facilitates to remove almost all of it and helps in restoration of physiologic mucocilliary clearance system enabling the sinus mucosa to return to its normal condition after the procedure. 45 patients, who underwent FESS from April 1997 to December 1998, were closely monitored. Outcome was assessed by the physician as well as by patients. Seventy five percent of the patients showed complete resolution of symptoms with another fifteen percent improved with additional medical treatment. Based on our experience from 45 patients, FESS is currently recommended, as the surgical procedure of choice for chronic or recurrent sinusitis after medical treatment has proven ineffective
