ABSTRACT

Background@#Obesity is a major cause of diabetes and hypertension. Previous studies have analyzed the effects of obesity on diabetes and hypertension by comparing non-obese and obese groups. Here, we investigated the effects of obesity type through comparison between obesity types in obese adults. @*Methods@#The sample comprised 8,914 adults, classified as obese according to body mass index criteria or waist circumference criteria, selected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2020). Obesity was classified as abdominal obesity-only, general obesity-only, and abdominal and general obesity. The effects of obesity type on diabetes and hypertension were analyzed using logistic regression model. @*Results@#12.78% of participants exhibited abdominal obesity-only, 22.35% had general obesity-only, and 64.78% had both types. The proportion of patients aged ≥60 years was 57.52% in the abdominal obesity-only group, while 17.12% in the general obesity-only group. The general obesity-only group had a lower incidence of diabetes than the abdominal obesity-only group (odds ratio [OR], 0.60; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.47-0.77), and the abdominal and general obesity group had a higher incidence of hypertension than the abdominal obesity-only group (OR, 1.82; 95% CI, 1.54-2.15). @*Conclusions@#Abdominal obesity has a stronger association with diabetes than general obesity, and the risk of hypertension is greatest when both obesity types coexist. Individuals with abdominal obesity-only are likely to be excluded from obesity management, especially when aged ≥60 years. The risk of hypertension is much greater when abdominal and general obesity coexist, emphasizing the need to use both body mass index and waist circumference to define obesity.

ABSTRACT

A reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a predictor for mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study aimed to compare mortality according to the GFR and eGFR calculation methods during long-term clinical follow-ups. Using the Korean Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry-National Institutes of Health Data, 13,021 patients with AMI were included in this study. Patients were divided into the surviving (n=11,503, 88.3%) and deceased (n=1,518, 11.7%) groups.Clinical characteristics, cardiovascular risk factors, and 3-year mortality-related factors were analyzed. eGFR was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equations. The surviving group was younger than the deceased group (62.6±12.4 vs. 73.6±10.5 years, p<0.001), whereas the deceased group had higher hypertension and diabetes prevalences than the surviving group. A high Killip class was more frequently observed in the deceased group. eGFR was significantly lower in the deceased group (82.2±24.1 vs. 55.2±28.6 ml/min/1.73 m 2 , p<0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that low eGFR was an independent risk factor for mortality during the 3-year follow-up. The CKD-EPI equation was more useful for predicting mortality than the MDRD equation (0.766; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.753-0.779 vs. 0.738; 95% CI, 0.724-0.753; p=0.001). Decreased renal function was a significant predictor of mortality after 3 years in patients with AMI. The CKD-EPI equation was more useful for predicting mortality than the MDRD equation.

ABSTRACT

Long-term administration of levodopa (L-DOPA) to patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) commonly results in involuntary dyskinetic movements, as is known for L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia (LID). 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) has recently been shown to alleviate LID; however, no biochemical alterations to aberrant excitatory conditions have been revealed yet. In the present study, we aimed to confirm its anti-dyskinetic effect and to discover the unknown molecular mechanisms of action of 5-HTP in LID. We made an LID-induced mouse model through chronic L-DOPA treatment to 6-hydroxydopamine-induced hemi-parkinsonian mice and then administered 5-HTP 60 mg/kg for 15 days orally to LID-induced mice. In addition, we performed behavioral tests and analyzed the histological alterations in the lesioned part of the striatum (ST). Our results showed that 5-HTP significantly suppressed all types of dyskinetic movements (axial, limb, orolingual and locomotive) and its effects were similar to those of amantadine, the only approved drug by Food and Drug Administration. Moreover, 5-HTP did not affect the efficacy of L-DOPA on PD motor mani-festations. From a molecular perspective, 5-HTP treatment significantly decreased phosphorylated CREB and ΔFosB expression, commonly known as downstream factors, increased in LID conditions. Furthermore, we found that the effects of 5-HTP were not mediated by dopamine1 receptor (D1)/DARPP32/ERK signaling, but regulated by AKT/mTOR/S6K signaling, which showed different mechanisms with amantadine in the denervated ST. Taken together, 5-HTP alleviates LID by regulating the hyperactivated striatal AKT/mTOR/S6K and CREB/ΔFosB signaling.

ABSTRACT

Parkinson’s disease (PD) which has various pathological mechanisms, recently, it is attracting attention to the mechanism via microbiome-gut-brain axis. 6-Shogaol, a representative compound of ginger, have been known for improving PD phenotypes by reducing neuroinflammatory responses. In the present study, we investigated whether 6-shogaol and ginger attenuate degeneration induced by Proteus Mirabilis(P. mirabilis) on the intestine and brain, simultaneously. C57BL/6J mice received P. mirabilis for 5 days. Ginger (300 mg/kg) and 6-shogaol (10 mg/kg) were treated by gavage feeding for 22 days including the period of P. mirabilis treatment. Results showed that 6-shogaol and ginger improved motor dysfunction and dopaminergic neuronal death induced by P. mirabilis treatment. In addition, they suppressed P. mirabilis-induced intestinal barrier disruption, pro-inflammatory signals such as toll-like receptor and TNF-α, and intestinal α-synuclein aggregation. Moreover, ginger and 6-shogaol significantly inhibited neuroinflammation and α-synuclein in the brain. Taken together, 6-shogaol and ginger have the potential to ameliorate PD-like motor behavior and degeneration of dopaminergic neurons induced by P. mirabilis in mice. Here, these findings are meaningful in that they provide the first experimental evidence that 6-shogaol might attenuate PD via regulating gut-brain axis.

ABSTRACT

Background@#To minimize nosocomial infection against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), most hospitals conduct a prescreening process to evaluate the patient or guardian of any symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 or exposure to a COVID-19 patient at entrances of hospital buildings. In our hospital, we have implemented a two-level prescreening process in the outpatient clinic: an initial prescreening process at the entrance of the outpatient clinic (PPEO) and a second prescreening process is repeated in each department. If any symptoms or epidemiological history are identified at the second level, an emergency code is announced through the hospital's address system. The patient is then guided outside through a designated aisle. In this study, we analyze the cases missed in the PPEO that caused the emergency code to be applied. @*Methods@#All cases reported from March 2020 to April 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. We calculated the incidence of cases missed by the PPEO per 1,000 outpatients and compared the incidence between first-time hospital visitors and those visiting for the second time or more; morning and afternoon office hours; and days of the week. @*Results@#During the study period, the emergency code was applied to 449 cases missed by the PPEO. Among those cases, 20.7% were reported in otorhinolaryngology, followed by 11.6% in gastroenterology, 5.8% in urology, and 5.8% in dermatology. Fever was the most common symptom (59.9%), followed by cough (19.8%). The incidence of cases per 1,000 outpatients was significantly higher among first-time visitors than among those visiting for the second time or more (1.77 [confidence interval (CI), 1.44–2.10] vs. 0.59 [CI, 0.52–0.65], respectively) (P < 0.001). @*Conclusion@#Fever was the most common symptom missed by the PPEO, and otorhinolaryngology and gastroenterology most frequently reported missed cases. Cases missed by the PPEO were more likely to occur among first-time visitors than returning visitors. The results obtained from this study can provide insights or recommendations to other healthcare facilities in operating prescreening processes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Background/Aims@#The prevalence of cardiovascular disease among women is lower than that among men in middle age, but increases after middle age. This study was performed to compare the risk factors for cardiovascular disease according to sex in Koreans adults. @*Methods@#Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the 5th, 6th, and 7th years (2010–2017) were analyzed. This study examined the risk factors for cardiovascular disease among adults. From the total of 41,386 patients, 11,529 patients were selected. @*Results@#The overall prevalence of cardiovascular disease in Korean adults was 27.9%, and the prevalence was higher in women than in men (55.3% vs. 44.7%, respectively, p < 0.001). Women with cardiovascular disease were older than men (66.6 ± 9.9 years vs. 63.9 ± 11.1 years, respectively, p < 0.001). The prevalence of cardiovascular disease was higher in women with comorbid depression and rheumatoid arthritis and higher in men with diabetes mellitus. Multivariate regression analysis showed that stress (OR 2.31, 95% CI 1.28–4.17, p = 0.005) and smoking (OR 1.61, 95% CI 1.04–2.48, p = 0.031) were independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease in men, while depression (OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.22–3.39, p = 0.007), low education level, rheumatoid arthritis, and poor subjective health status (OR 1.70, 95% CI 1.20–2.41, p = 0.003) were independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease in women. @*Conclusions@#Differences were detected in cardiovascular risk factors according to sex in Korea. The most important risk factors were smoking and stress in men, and depression, low education level, rheumatoid arthritis, and poor subjective health status in women.

ABSTRACT

Neuroinflammation is an immune response within the central nervous system against various proinflammatory stimuli. Abnormal activation of this response contributes to neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and Huntington disease. Therefore, pharmacologic modulation of abnormal neuroinflammation is thought to be a promising approach to amelioration of neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we evaluated the synthetic flavone derivative 3′,4′-dihydroxyflavone, investigating its anti-neuroinflammatory activity in BV2 microglial cells and in a mouse model. In BV2 microglial cells, 3′,4′-dihydroxyflavone successfully inhibited production of chemokines such as nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 and proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 1 beta, and interleukin 6 in BV2 microglia. It also inhibited phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation. This indicates that the anti-inflammatory activities of 3′,4′-dihydroxyflavone might be related to suppression of the proinflammatory MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways. Similar anti-neuroinflammatory activities of the compound were observed in the mouse model. These findings suggest that 3′,4′-dihydroxyflavone is a potential drug candidate for the treatment of microglia-related neuroinflammatory diseases.

ABSTRACT

Microglia have multiple functions in regulating homeostasis of the central nervous system. Microglia cells have been implicated as active contributors to neuron damage in neurodegenerative disorders. In this study, medicinal plant extracts (MPEs) were used to evaluate the cell-death induction effect in microglia BV-2 cells. Among 35 MPEs tested in this study, 4 MPEs showed less than a 30% cell survival after 24 hours of incubation. These were Foeniculi Fructus, Forsythiae Fructus, Zingiberis Rhizoma and Hedera Rhombea. The concentration showed that 50% cell death (IC50) occurred with 33, 83, 67 Ed highlight: Please confirm wording, and 81 µ /ml, respectively. For further study, we chose Zingiberis Rhizoma (ZR) which showed a reasonably low IC50 value and an induction of cell death in a relatively narrow range. Western blot analysis showed that ZR-treated cells showed activation of caspase-3 and cleavage of PARP Ed highlight: When an acronym is first presented it needs to be spelled out in both dose- and time-dependent manners. However, the level of Bcl-2 and Bax were not changed by ZR-treatment in BV-2 cells. These results suggest that ZR-induced apoptosis in BV-2 cells occured through caspase-3 activation. The results also suggested that ZR may be useful in developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIMS: It is well known that the menopause is related to interference in lipid metabolism, obesity, and a hypercoagulable state. The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of the menopause in middle-aged Korean females with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS: A total of 1,781 middle-aged females (aged < 65 years) in the Korean Acute Myocardial Infarction registry were enrolled into this study between November 2005 and December 2013. The patients were divided into two groups; the pre-menopause group (≤ 55 years old) and the menopause group (56-64 years old). Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) were analyzed over a one-year follow-up period. RESULTS: The pre-menopause and menopause groups comprised 669 patients (mean age, 49.1 ± 5.6 years) and 1,112 patients (mean age, 60.6 ± 2.6 years), respectively. The incidence of hypertension (42.2% vs. 59.4%, p < 0.001), diabetes mellitus (DM) (27.4% vs. 35.7%, p < 0.001), and dyslipidemia (12.9% vs. 17.7%, p = 0.008) were more frequent in menopausal patients. Additionally, the rates of smoking (20% vs. 12.7%, p < 0.001) and familial history (12% vs. 6.8%, p < 0.001) were higher in the pre-menopause group. The cumulative rates of MACE did not show any differences between the two groups. A history of atrial fibrillation, previous AMI and DM, higher Killip class, and multi-vessel disease were independent risk factors for predicting one-year MACE. CONCLUSIONS: The survival analysis demonstrated that there was no significant difference in MACE rates between the pre-menopause and menopause groups during the one-year follow-up. Therefore, middle-aged pre-menopausal women should be treated more intensively, regardless of whether they are menopausal.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The local public hospitals in Korea are regarded as institutions that must consider the provision of good quality public health services, as well as profitability. Therefore it is important to improve nursing services to produce positive change in local public hospitals. This study was done to examine the relationships between self efficacy, organizational commitment, customer orientation and nursing performance for nurses in local public hospitals. METHODS: For this study, 5 of 34 institutions were selected through random sampling: and 134 nurses working in local public hospitals were selected. Data were collected from March 28 to April 8, 2016 using self-report questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0. RESULTS: The major findings are summarized as follows: (1) There were significant positive correlations between self efficacy, organizational commitment, customer orientation, and nursing performance. (2) The factors affecting nursing performance were self efficacy, organizational commitment, and customer orientation, in that order, and these variables explained 57% of nursing performance. CONCLUSION: Administrators in local public hospitals should use the results of this study to develop a strategy for improving nursing performance.

ABSTRACT

Cyperi Rhizoma (CR), the rhizome of Cyperus rotundus L., exhibits neuroprotective effects in in vitro and in vivo models of neuronal diseases. Nevertheless, no study has aimed at finding the neuroactive constituent(s) of CR. In this study, we identified active compounds in a CR extract (CRE) using bioactivity-guided fractionation. We first compared the anti-oxidative and neuroprotective activities of four fractions and the CRE total extract. Only the ethyl acetate (EA) fraction revealed strong activity, and further isolation from the bioactive EA fraction yielded nine constituents: scirpusin A (1), scirpusin B (2), luteolin (3), 6′-acetyl-3,6-diferuloylsucrose (4), 4′,6′ diacetyl-3,6-diferuloylsucrose (5), p-coumaric acid (6), ferulic acid (7), pinellic acid (8), and fulgidic acid (9). The activities of constituents 1-9 were assessed in terms of anti-oxidative, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-amyloid-β activities. Constituents 1, 2, and 3 exhibited strong activities; constituents 1 and 2 were characterized for the first time in this study. These results provide evidence for the value of CRE as a source of multi-functional neuroprotectants, and constituents 1 and 2 may represent new candidates for further development in therapeutic use against neurodegenerative diseases.

ABSTRACT

We report here the results of surveys on external quality assessment (EQA) of blood bank tests in Korea carried out in 2014. The proficiency testing specimens were prepared at Ajou University Hospital and the response rates for the 1st and 2nd trials were 94.3% (537/549) and 96.0% (545/554), respectively. No answers were considered incorrect, and the average accuracy rates of six different test items on the regular survey were as follows: ABO grouping, 98.5% to 100.0%; RhD typing, 98.1% to 99.4%; crossmatching, 91.2% to 99.6%; direct antiglobulin test (DAT) using a polyspecific reagent, 96.7% to 98.4%; DAT using an immunoglobulin-G monospecific reagent, 93.8% to 98.7%; DAT using a C3d monospecific reagent, 89.5% to 98.7%; unexpected antibody screening test, 96.2% to 100.0%; and antibody identification test, 69.8% to 100.0%. Test items for the pilot survey were reactivities to anti-A1 and anti-H, Rh subgrouping, and ABO antibody titration. Except for the result of the antibody identification test for specimens with multiple antibodies, we obtained excellent survey results for the EQA of blood bank tests carried out in 2014. In addition, the number of participating institutes was higher in 2014 than in 2013. The EQA of blood bank tests in 2014 should be helpful for improving the quality of the participating laboratories.

BACKGROUND: Korean Blood Safety Commission has implemented external proficiency testing (PT) for blood grouping test (BGT) to help improve the quality of blood centers since 2011. We analyzed the results of 2014 PT for BGT to help in planning the future PT for BGT and to improve the quality of blood centers. METHODS: Whole blood survey samples including three panels for ABO grouping and three panels for D typing were sent to 69 institutes. Evaluation criteria for BGT were as follows: 'Good' for answers matched with intended results, 'Acceptable' for correct answers other than that of 'Good', 'Unacceptable' for answers other than those of 'Good+acceptable' as correct answers; and 'Not graded' for answers in case of different answers in the two standard laboratories. RESULTS: All of the answer rates of 'Good' for D typing were 100%. However, the answer rates of 'Good' for cell typing, serum typing and interpretation for 14-ABO-2 samples with discrepant result between cell typing and serum typing were 39.1%, 29%, and 47.8%, respectively. Those of 'Unacceptable' for cell typing and interpretation for 14-ABO-2 samples were 2.8% and 1.4%. CONCLUSION: Because the answer rates of ABO grouping for samples with discrepant result between cell typing and serum typing were not high, education for this case is needed. Diversity of materials for PT would be necessary for more accurate evaluation of the performance of BGT in blood centers.

ABSTRACT

Cognitive impairment is a result of dementia of diverse causes, such as cholinergic dysfunction and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Houttuynia cordata Thunb. (Saururaceae) has long been used as a traditional herbal medicine. It has biological activities including protective effects against amyloid beta (Abeta) toxicity, via regulation of calcium homeostasis, in rat hippocampal cells. To extend previous reports, we investigated the effects of water extracts of H. cordata herb (HCW) on tauopathies, also involving calcium influx. We then confirmed the effects of HCW in improving memory impairment and neuronal damage in mice with Abeta-induced neurotoxicity. We also investigated the effects of HCW against scopolamine-induced cholinergic dysfunction in mice. In primary neuronal cells, HCW inhibited the phosphorylation of tau by regulating p25/p35 expression in Abeta-induced neurotoxicity. In mice with Abeta-induced neurotoxicity, HCW improved cognitive impairment, as assessed with behavioral tasks, such as novel object recognition, Y-maze, and passive avoidance tasks. HCW also inhibited the degeneration of neurons in the CA3 region of the hippocampus in Abeta-induced neurotoxicity. Moreover, HCW, which had an IC50 value of 79.7 microg/ml for acetylcholinesterase inhibition, ameliorated scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment significantly in Y-maze and passive avoidance tasks. These results indicate that HCW improved cognitive impairment, due to cholinergic dysfunction, with inhibitory effects against tauopathies and cholinergic antagonists, suggesting that HCW may be an interesting candidate to investigate for the treatment of AD.

ABSTRACT

We report here the results of surveys for External Quality Assessment (EQA) of blood bank tests carried out in 2013. The proficiency testing specimens were prepared at Ajou University Hospital and sent to 548 and 545 institutes participating in the 1st and 2nd trial, respectively. Test items for the surveys were ABO grouping, RhD typing, crossmatching, direct antiglobulin test (DAT), antibody screening test, and antibody identification test. The response rates for the 1st and 2nd trials were 94.3% and 96.0%, respectively. No answers were considered incorrect answers, and the average accuracy rates of different test items of the survey were as follows: ABO grouping, 98.9% to 100%; RhD typing, 98.4% to 99.2%; crossmatching, 94.4% to 100.0%; DAT using polyspecific reagent, 94.5% to 99.7%; DAT using IgG monospecific reagent, 94.7% to 98.8%; DAT using C3d monospecific reagent, 91.3% to 98.6%; unexpected antibody screening test, 90.9% to 100%; and antibody identification test, 87.3% to 100.0%. Overall, we obtained excellent survey results for the EQA of blood bank tests carried out in 2013, and the number of participating institutes was higher in 2013 than in 2012.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate effects of a health education program based on social cognitive theory on university students with risk factors for metabolic syndrome. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 88 students who had at least 2 risk factors for Metabolic Syndrome (47 students for the experimental and 41 for the control group). The health education program consisted of thirteen sessions. Knowledge regarding smoking and alcohol drinking, self-efficacy and self-esteem were evaluated. t-test, chi2-test, Fisher's exact test, and paired t-test were conducted to analyze the data. SPSS/WIN 19.0 Statistics program was used. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant increase in self-efficacy in the experimental group compared to the control group. No significant changes in knowledge and self-esteem were found. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the health education program for university students was partially effective. Further work is required to develop more effective health education programs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Non-high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (non-HDL-C) and apolipoprotein B (ApoB) are markers of atherosclerotic risk and predictors of cardiovascular events. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical impact of non-HDL-C and ApoB on clinical outcomes in metabolic syndrome (MS) patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) undergoing percuatneous coronary intervetion. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We analyzed 470 MS patients (64.4+/-12.0 years, 53.6% male) with AMI who were followed-up for 12-month after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from December 2005 to January 2008 in a single center. These patients were divided into 2 groups based on median values of non-HDL-C and ApoB. We studied their baseline and follow-up relation with 12-month clinical outcomes, all-cause death and major adverse cardiac events (MACE). RESULTS: Mean values of baseline non-HDL-C and ApoB were 141.2+/-43.1 mg/dL and 99.3+/-29.0 mg/dL respectively. During 12-month follow-up 32 MACE (6.8%) and 12 deaths (2.5%) occurred. We observed significant correlation between non-HDL-C and ApoB. Twelve-month MACE and all-cause death after PCI showed no significant relation as non-HDL-C or ApoB levels increased. Follow-up patients (n=306, rate 65%) also did not show significant relation with clinical outcomes. Twelve-month MACE decreased as non-HDL-C and ApoB reduction rates increased. CONCLUSION: There was no significant association between higher non-HDL-C or ApoB and 12-month clinical outcomes in MS patients with AMI undergoing PCI. ApoB was found to be a better predictor of 12-month MACE than non-HDL-C based on their reduction rates.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to develop and test the effects of an elder health promotion program and apply strategies for elder health leader training sessions with elders at senior citizen halls. METHODS: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 49 elders at a senior citizen hall (intervention: 27, control: 22). The elder health promotion program consisted of health education and exercise. A professional leader led the program for 4 weeks, and then an elder health leader and research assistant led for 8 weeks (total 12 weeks). Scales for elder health promoting behaviors, perceived health status, life satisfaction and senior citizen hall capability were used and physical fitness levels were measured. Data were collected between April 21 and July 28, 2010 and analyzed using Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA with SPSS/WIN 12.0. RESULTS: Health promoting behaviors, physical fitness, perceived health status, and senior citizen hall capacity were significantly better in the experimental group after the intervention compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Study findings indicate that elder health promotion programs applying strategies of elder health leader training are effective and can be recommended as nursing interventions for health promotion of these elders.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate issues and needs related to child health management as recognized by teachers in day care centers. METHODS: Data were collected from 130 teachers from 20 day care centers. Each teacher was interviewed in depth and the data were examined through content analysis. RESULTS: For issues on child health management, the analysis scheme consisted of 10 categories and 36 subcategories. For needs on child health management, the analysis scheme consisted of 10 categories and 37 subcategories. Teachers indicated that tools for physical examination and playgrounds were insufficient and they had difficulty in controlling attendance of infectious children. They also indicated the lack of a linkage between day care centers and hospitals, lack of knowledge of health management, high teacher versus child ratio, and lack of help and budget needed for health care. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest the need to develop a linkage between day care centers and medical institutions. Also there is a need to provide support from health care personnel, health education for teacher, health management manuals for teachers, and financial aid to satisfy the needs for health management in day care center for children.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the clinical nurses' resilience, occupational stress, and occupational satisfaction and to identify the correlations among them. METHODS: Structured questionnaires were administered with total 75 questions for 433 nurses working at a university hospital in Jin-ju from July 19 to 30, 2010. Data from the completed questionnaires were analyzed with the SPSS/WIN program. RESULTS: The resilience had a significant difference according to the age, marital status, religion, education level, annual income, motive of choosing the nursing science, clinical career, position, and workplace. Resilience had a negative correlation with occupational stress (r=-.405), and had a positive correlation with occupational satisfaction (r=.380). Occupational stress had a negative correlation with occupational satisfaction (r=-.637). CONCLUSION: The higher their resilience was, the lower their occupational stress and the higher the occupational satisfaction. It is recommended that intervention program be developed that can enhance personal resilience in nurse.
