ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: There recurred controversies related to legal allowance of abortion since newly advancing prenatal genetic testing technology. This survey was aimed to identify the attitudes toward marriage, and pregnancy (AMP) and terminating pregnancy (ATP) among Korean nursing students. METHOD: A descriptive study was performed from October to November 2012 in South Korea. 424 nursing students responded to two types of tools developed by authors. Questionnaire for ATP is consisted of 10 items with 5-points Likert Scale. Questionnaire for AMP is 12 items containing 5 categories. RESULTS: Mean score of ATP was 36.90. Students that are enrolled in bachelor degree had a significant higher ATP. Students who are currently dating with an opposite gender showed much higher level of ATP than those are not. Lower group of delayed the time of getting marriage and pregnancy showed highest score of ATP, significantly. CONCLUSION: Individual factor must be primarily considered when assessing ATP of nursing students, for example current relationship with opposite gender and educational background, attitude toward marriage and pregnancy. Further studies are needed to identify personal factors of the young adults affecting on the ATP.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study was to describe the relationship between optimism and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in breast cancer patients. METHODS: The data were collected by self-administered questionnaires from March 5 to April 24, 2012. The participants included 204 breast cancer patients at K university hospital in D city. The utilized measurements were Life Orientation Test-revised (LOT-R) and Impact of Event Scale (IES). RESULTS: The mean scores of optimism and PTSD were 21.61+/-3.54 and 30.18+/-10.43, respectively. There were significant differences in the score of optimism by monthly income, engaging in a hobby, perceived level of stress management, need to manage stress, and people thought to be helpful in stress management. There were significant differences in the score of PTSD by engaging in a hobby, recurrence of cancer, the number of hospitalization, perceived level of stress management, need to manage stress, and people thought to be helpful in stress management. There was a negative correlation between optimism and PTSD. CONCLUSION: To relieve post-traumatic stress in breast cancer patients, nurses should provide ongoing psychological stress assessment from the beginning of the diagnostic stage and offer proper nursing intervention to improve optimism in dealing with their stress.

ABSTRACT

Chylous ascites is extravasation of lymphatic fluid and retention in the peritoneal cavity due to traurna or obstruction of the lymphatic system. Chylous ascites is very rare complication of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and is associated with trauma to the lymphatics during catheter insertion in the early stage of CAPD and repeated mild trauma to the lyrnphatics during longterm dialysis. Chylous ascites in the CAPD is suspected when the drained peritoneal fluid is milky white and confirmed by demonstration of the specific components of chyle, such as elevated triglyceride and low cholesterol than plasma and should be differentiated from pseudochyle and bacterial peritonitis. We report a case of chylous ascites in a patient undergoing CAPD at 2 months later of initiation of CAPD, which was not improved by conservative management. So CAPD catheter was removed and renal replacement therapy was changed to hemodialysis.

ABSTRACT

In Korea chronic lymphocytic leukemia(CLL) is a rare diesase with evidence immunologic incompetence. The immunodeficiency of patients with CLL could place them at increased risk of new cancers. The incidence of secondary malignancy, including lung cancer has increased in patients with CLL and this should be also considered in the differential diagnosis of a new pulmonary infiltrate appearing in patients with known CLL. A-73-year old male patient with CLL was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea. Chest X-ray showed multiple scattered small nodules in both lung fields and alveolar consolidation mass at right lower lung. Histopathological examination of the bronchoscopic biopsy specimen demonstrated that he had a moderatly differentiated adenacarcinoma of lung. Since we experienced a case of metachronous adenocarcinoma of lung in patient with known CLL, we report this with a review of literatures.

ABSTRACT

We experienced a case of acute renal failure by oxalate poisoning in a 44-year-old Korean woman. She presented with hematemesis and epigastric pain after drinking of oxalate in a suicidal attempt. After admission, acute renal failure was developed and the patient was treated with hemodialysis. On renal biopsy, there were numerous calcium oxalate crystals which appeared clearly in Hematoxylin-eosin stained sections and were refractile under polarized light microscope. We report a case of acute renal failure by oxalate poisoning with review of the literature.
