ABSTRACT

Mycobacterial Spindle cell Pseudotumor (MSP) is a rare complication of mycobacterial infection, especially the atypical variety. It is characterized by an exuberant spindle cell proliferation. This has been reported in the lymph nodes, skin, spleen, lungs, brain, etc. The incidence is higher in immuno-compromised patients, especially those with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. It is rare to encounter this lesion in infants. We report a case of MSP in the axillary lymph node of a 7-month-old infant, following Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccination due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, which was proved by PCR.

ABSTRACT

Thirty-six human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients with lymphadenopathy were subjected to fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) over a period of 2 years. The maximum number of cases was reported in the age group of 21 to 30 years. Majority of the patients were males. The maximum number of cases had tuberculosis (58.3%) followed by reactive lymphadenitis (36.1%), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (2.7%) and acute suppurative lymphadenitis (2.7%). FNAC is an important diagnostic tool in the evaluation of lymphadenopathy in HIV-positive patients.

ABSTRACT

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis is unusual in southern India. The diagnosis was made by histopathological examination which is purported to have poor sensitivity. The culture of the specimen confirmed the diagnosis. The pre-eminent role of a careful study of serial sections is emphasized.
