ABSTRACT

Background: Cancer can occur to everyone regardless of sex, age, culture, socioeconomic status, and geographical area. Various forms of cancer strike at different age, ethnic, gender groups with severity, and varying frequency. Objective: The study objectives were as follows: (1) To develop and implement a home care model on home care competency of caregivers and (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of home care model on home care competency of caregivers. Materials and Methods: For this study, a quantitative research approach was used to develop and implement a home care model on home care competency (knowledge and practice) of caregivers. A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design was used in the study. The study was conducted in a selected hospital, Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Consecutive sampling technique was used to select the study subject. Data were collected from 40 caregivers of oral cancer patients using a structured knowledge questionnaire, structured self-report nutritional practice checklist, and structured observational wound care checklist. Results: The mean post-test practice scores and knowledge scores (18.75, 12.82, and 7.55) were higher than mean pre-test practice scores and knowledge scores (11.95, 8.85, and 4.23) which were found statistically significant at P < 0.05. The mean percentage area-wise distribution of knowledge regarding nutritional management at pre-test was 51% and wound care management was 55%, which was improved for both (81%) at post-test. No significant association was found between knowledge and practice except occupation. Minor correlation was found between post-test knowledge and post-test practice scores. Conclusion: It is concluded that home care competency program was found effective to improve the knowledge and practice of caregivers of oral cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

In Brazil, homeopathic medicines are prepared and delivered by homeopathic pharmacies, which allows for exact fitting of the medicines to the patients’ needs. As a result of the cumulative work of homeopathic pharmacists, several editions of the Brazilian Homeopathic Pharmacopeia were published, resulting in nationwide standardization of the preparation of homeopathic medicines. That advance notwithstanding, clinical practice showed that some particular cases escaped the scope of the standards. To contribute to a more thorough standardization of the preparation of homeopathic medicines, in the present article we describe procedures for preparation and delivery of fifty-millesimal (LM) potencies with additional dilutions (for more sensitive patients), in complex formulas or globules.

ABSTRACT

We analyzed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood serum from 55 patients with neurocysticercosis (NC) at different clinical stages. According to inflammatory activity in the CSF, three stages were identified: (1) reactive, when there was at least an increase in the number of cells; (2) weakly reactive, when significant alterations were found in the CSF, including an increase in gamma globulins, albeit without hypercytosis; (3) non-reactive, when there was neither hypercytosis nor increase in gamma globulins. Nineteen patients had the reactive form; 18 had the weakly reactive form; 18 displayed the non-reactive form. Local immunoproduction was intense in the reactive group, moderate in the weakly reactive group, and absent in the non-reactive group. The specific antibody index was raised in approximately 2/3 of patients with the reactive form, 2/3 in those with the weakly reactive form, and 1/3 in those with the non-reactive form. In conclusion: (1) the classical CSF syndrome in NC can present both in complete and partial modes; (2) local immunoproduction can occur in weakly reactive forms; (3) a raised specific antibody index can occur in the absence of an inflammatory reaction in the CSF
