ABSTRACT

Visceral leishmaniasis is a major cause of morbidity in children in Yemen. This work has been conducted on 20 cases selected among the attendant of Outpatient Clinic of Al Salam Hospital, who presented by fever and splenomegaly. History and thorough examination has been done. Full laboratory investigations like CBC, malarial smear, agglutination fever test and formol gel test were done. Splenic aspiration had been done for all cases. The clinical profile of all cases was a triad: huge splenomegaly [50%], pallor [70%] and fever [100%]. Also, the laboratory profile was a triad: leucopenia [95%], anemia [100%] and thrombocytcpenia [85%]. Splenic aspiration in all cases, revealed Leishmania donovani bodies and increase in number and size of reticuloendothelial cells without any expected hazardous complications, while foimol gel test was positive in 50%. We conclude that, in tropical areas, where this clinical triad is revealed in any case, splenic aspiration is recommended

A surgical procedure [cryotherapy] and their combined effect. Showed that 53.3% of cases were cured by Rifampicin. 57.1% of cases by cryotherapy and 100% of cases by combined therapy. Also combined therapy showed a significantly shorter duration of therapy than either alone. Thus combined therapy can be considered safe and effective for treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis
