ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the causes and treatments of entropion and ectropion in adults. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 397 patients (490 eyes) with entropion and 109 patients (138 eyes) with ectropion who underwent corrective surgery at Kim's Eye Hospital from January 2009 to December 2012. RESULTS: The surgical correction of entropion was 3.5 times greater than that of ectropion. The causes of entropion were classified as senile (98.4%), cicatricial (1.4%) and spastic (0.2%). The causes of ectropion were classified as cicatricial (60.1%), paralytic (23.2%) and senile (16.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The main causes of entropion and ectropion were senile and cicatricial, respectively. Specifically, senile entropion was more common than senile ectropion, which is considered to be related to the lid anatomy of Asian patients.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of Nasopore(R) as a nasal packing material on the surgical success rate and prevalence of postoperative complications after endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). METHODS: The present study included a total of 558 patients (699 eyes) with primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction who underwent endonasal DCR; 227 eyes were packed with Nasopore(R) and 472 eyes were packed with Merocel(R). The surgical success rate and postoperative complications such as synechiae, granulation, wound healing (osteal mucosal epithelium epithelialization), postoperative bleeding, infection, and revision rate were compared between the packing materials. RESULTS: The surgical success rate of the Nasopore(R) group (99.1%, 98.6%) showed significantly better results than the Merocel(R) group (97.2%, 95.1%) at postoperative 1 and 3 months (p = 0.04, 0.03 Pearson chi-square test), whereas there was no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups in postoperative surgical success rate at 1 week and 6 months. In comparison of postoperative complications, the Nasopore(R) group (0%) showed a lower incidence of delayed wound healing (delayed epithelialization of osteal mucosal epithelium) than the Merocel(R) group (2.3%; p = 0.013), whereas there was no difference in granulation, synechiae, postoperative bleeding, infection and revision rate (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The Nasopore(R) group showed a lower proportion of delayed wound healing and improvement of the surgical success rate at an early postoperative period after endonasal DCR compared to non-absorbable nasal packing material.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Alteration of p53 genes is rare, but it is related with progressive diseases in hematologic malignancies. The wild type of p53 protein is not usually detected, but mutated p53 proteins are accumulated in the nuclei of tumor cells, which can be detected by immunohistochemical stain. Anti-p53 antibodies are found in the sera of patients with various malignant tumors as the result of immune response to accumulation of mutated p53 protein in tumor cells. METHODS: The relation of serum anti-p53 anti-bodies and cellular p53 protein expression to clinical features in 36 cases of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and 58 cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) was analyzed. Anti-p53 antibodies in the patient's sera were measured with enzyme immunoassay (p53 autoantibodies ELISA, Dianova, Hamburg, Germany). Immunohistochemical staining for p53 protein was performed with the streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase method (LSAB kit, DAKO, Denmark) and anti-p53 monoclonal antibody (DO-7, DAKO, Denmark) in paraffin embedded bone marrow biopsy sections. RESULTS: Anti-p53 antibodies were positive in one of 36 (2.7%) MDS cases, and in four of 58 (6.8%) AML cases. Overexpression of p53 protein was seen in five (13.9%) of MDS and in five (8.6%) of AML. Serum p53 antibodies and p53 protein overexpression were more frequently found in RAEB, RAEB-t and M6 sutypes. There was no relation between anti-p53 antibodies and p53 protein overexpression in MDS and AML. The patients of MDS with anti-p53 antibodies and p53 overexpression tended to have severe dyserythropoiesis, higher Bounemouth scores and poor prognostic karyotypes and associated with shorter survival duration as compared to those without anti-p53 antibodies and p53 overexpression (4+/-1 vs 26+/-4 months, P=0.007). The patients of AML with anti-p53 antibodies and p53 protein overexpression tended to have poor prognostic karyotypes and resistance to chemotherapy. CONCLUSION: Anti-p53 antibodies are rarely observed in sera of patients with MDS and AML, probably reflecting the relatively low incidence of p53 mutation. But the findings suggest that the presence of p53 alteration could be useful to predict resistance to chemotherapy and short survival in particular sutypes of MDS and AML.

ABSTRACT

Several extraction cases with advanced bone loss as a result of periodontal disease, root or labial bone fracture, extensive caries, and periapical lesions occur esthetic, functional problems and severe bone loss. Therefore, to treat these cases used several surgical methods and socket preservation among this therapies have been evaluated simple, effective and good prognosis in the implant placement. Socket preservation therapy have been used with barrier membranes or/and graft materials. Deproteinized bovine bone mineral have been evaluated ideal grafting materials. Recently, calcium-phosphate thin film coated bovine bone powders were developed in our country, but the study for these material wasn't reported. When two types of xenograft materials were implanted in extraction sockets of Beagle dogs, the effects of these were analyzed after 4 weeks and 8 weeks histological views. The results of this study were as follows. 1.In control groups, 4 weeks after implantation, the extraction sockets were filled with connective tissue which has dilated vessels and epithelial growth. And after 8 weeks, irregular connective bundles were observed. But new bone formation was not seen. 2.In Bio-Oss groups, epithelial growth was not seen and bone powder was covered with connective tissue fiber. New bone formation was found around the interproximal bone. There was no special change seen after 8 weeks, connective tissue fibers became more regular, and bone growth near bone powder was not made well. 3.In Ca-P BBP groups, epithelial cells didn't grow in the extraction sockets, there was a lot of new bone made around the bone powder after 8 weeks, new bone around bone powder was replaced with mature bone. It is thought that bone powder grafting into the extraction sockets is very useful for conservation of ridge, and Ca-P BBP is more effective in bone formation than Bio-Oss.
