ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives@#Microvascular remodeling and angiogenesis are elements of tissue remodeling characteristic of chronic inflammatory diseases, including nasal polyps (NPs). Angiogenesis reflects the balance between the actions of pro- and anti-angiogenic factors. Many pro-angiogenic factors are known, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). A number of anti-angiogenic factors (e.g., angiostatin and endostatin) also has been identified. Our objective was to assess the roles of VEGF, angiostatin, and endostatin in NP development. @*Methods@#The expression levels of VEGF, angiostatin, and endostatin were measured in NPs harvested during endoscopic endonasal surgery and compared with those in inferior turbinate mucosa (control) samples acquired from patients with hypertrophic rhinitis without allergy. Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining were used to analyze all samples. @*Results@#The levels of VEGF and angiostatin were significantly higher in the NP subjects than in the controls. Neither the VEGF/angiostatin ratio nor the endostatin level differed significantly between the two groups. However, the VEGF/endostatin ratio was significantly higher in the NP than in the control group. Both the NP and control tissues were diffusely immunoreactive for VEGF, angiostatin, and endostatin. @*Conclusion@#NP-associated hypoxia can elevate angiostatin level; moreover, an imbalance in the VEGF/endostatin ratio can contribute to NP formation.

ABSTRACT

The angiomyoma or vascular leiomyoma is an uncommon type of leiomyoma composed of smooth muscle cells and vascular endothelium. The tumor occurs mostly in the lower extremities as a slowly growing, firm and mobile mass, occasionally accompanied by pain. There are few cases of auricular angiomyoma reported in the literature; however, recently, we experienced a case of a 18-year-old man with protruding auricular mass. We performed a surgical excision and the final pathological result confirmed to angiomyoma. We report this case with a review of the related literatures.

ABSTRACT

Wilms's tumor is a malignant renal parenchymal neoplasm. This tumor is most frequently discovered by palpable abdominal mass, while only total gross hematuria is not common in subjective symptom. We have experienced a four year-old girl complaining total gross hematuria and could not define preoperative diagnosis by clinical, radiological and laboratory findings. After operation, Wilms's tumor was confirmed on pathology.

ABSTRACT

The urethral injuries are seemed to be increasing every year by development of various machine. Because sequelae of urethral injury vary with nature site of trauma, We observed the differences between bulbous and membranous, complete and incomplete injury. From retrospective study of 28 operated cases, following results were obtained. 1. High incidence of urinary tract infection (53.6% of total cases) was noted after primary operation of urethral rupture. 2. The incidence of urinary tract infection in non-fenestrated catheter was higher than that of fenestrated catheter. 3. Added suprapubic catheter was helpful in cases with periurethral fistula and abscess. 4. The incidence of impotence was higher if the rupture was membranous, and if there was pelvic bone fracture. 5. Peri-catheter urethrogram could serve diagnosis of periurethral abscess or diverticula which would indicate removal of the urethral catheter in favor of suprapubic cystostomy.

ABSTRACT

Interstitial cell tumor of testis is relatively rare, comprising only 0.8 to 1.4 percent of all testicular tumors. A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with rapid growing testicular mass. He had the experience of hydrocele and many times of aspiration since childhood. On physical examination, the testicular mass (left) was hard, adult fist sized and associated with transparent cystic fluid. Under the impression of testicular tumor, orchiectomy was performed. We report this case with review of literature.

ABSTRACT

A clinical observation was made on fifteen cases of giant hydronephrosis during recent 10 years. The results are as follows: 1. In 15 cases of giant hydronephrosis, congenital UPJ stricture was most common in etiology by 9 cases. 2. The male and female ratio was 13:2. No difference was noted in location (Rt 8, Lt7). 3. In 9 cases of giant hydronephrosis with congenital UPJ stricture, 5 cases were under the age of 20 years old. 4. Renal function (BUN, Ccr) was normal except 2 cases of renal tuberculosis. 5. In 4 cases out of 15, cystoscopic findings were normal. 6. Blood pressure was normal in all cases. 7. In 7 cases out of 15, the cystic content was more than 3000cc in amount. All of the 7 cases were congenital UPJ stricture patients. 8. In 7 cases out of giant hydronephrosis with congenital UPJ stricture, the contralateral side renal pelvis was ampullary type. 9. Operative procedures were nephrectomy or nephroureterectomy in all cases.

ABSTRACT

Influence of acute and chronic carbon monoxide poisoning on the rat testis has been studied enzymologically and the following results were obtained: Experimental animals were divided as 1) control, C1 (6 animals) 2) acute poisoning with 0.5% carbon monoxide until death, C2 (10 animals) 3) chronic poisoning with 0.05% carbon monoxide for 2 hours daily E1 (5 animals)...3 days/week for 8 weeks E2 (6 animals)...3 days/week for 4 weeks 4) acute poisoning until death with 0.5% carbon monoxide after chronic poisoning with 0.05% carbon monoxide E3 (5 animals)...chronic poisoning for 8 weeks plus acute poisoning E4 (5 animals)...chronic poisoning for 4 weeks plus acute poisoningUsing Neiland's method, the total activities and distribution patterns of lactic dehydrogenase in rat testis were measured. All of the data were analyzed statistically. 1. The total activities of lactic acid dehydrogenase in all experimental groups seemed to increase. In the group E3, the increase was statistically significant.(p2>4>3>5 4. No significant histopathological changes were observed in the rat testis.

ABSTRACT

Influence of acute and chronic carbon monoxide poisoning on the rat prostate has been studied enzymologically and the following results were obtained: 1. An increasing tendency of the total lactate dehydrogenase activity in the prostate tissue was observed is the chronic poisoning groups. 2. The lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme distribution pattern was not remarkably influenced by chronic poisoning. 3. The lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme distribution pattern is the prostate tissue was as LDH5> LDH4> LDH3> LDH2> LDH1.
