ABSTRACT

In order to evaluate the microbial contamination of contact lens cases in patients with contact lens-induced keratitis, 27 contact lens storage cases were collected and their solutions were cultured. Of 27 contact lens cases, 25%(93%) showed microbial contamination, Four contact lens cases(15%) were contaminated by single species., 14 contact lens cases(52%) by two species. and 9 contact lens cases(33%) by more than three species. Of total 36 identified microorganisms, the most commonly cultured microorganism was Pseudomonas sp.. Other G(-) bacteria such as Serratia, Enterobacter and Acanthamoeba were also cultured. Based on data from this study, most contact lens cases of patients with contact lens=induced keraititis were contaminated with multiple microorganisms. When considering the high contamination rate of contact lens cases and its causative factor in development of keratitis, proper disinfection of contact lens cases can not be overemphasized. Therefore, ophthalmologists should continue patient education for proper care of contact lens, especially disinfection of contact lens cases.

ABSTRACT

Several kinds of non-contact tonometers have been used since the first non-contact tonometer was introduced in the 1970's in order to measure intraocular pressure with easiness and accuracy. However several problems were still remained because of:he inaccuracy of the non-contact tonometer in high and low range of intraocular pressure. A new non-contact tonometer (Model CT-20, Japan) was recently introduced by Topcon Company to evaluate the clinical efficacy of the non-ccntact tonometers. The authors measured the intraocular pressure with Topcon tonometer, AO tonometer and Pulsair non-contat tonometer and compared the results with those measured with Goldmann tonometer. The results were as follows: 1) The correlation coefficient between Goldmann and Topcon tonometer was 0.8452 (p=0.001), Goldmann and Pulsair tonometer was 0.7084 (p=O.OOl) and Goldmann and AO tonometer was 0.6048 (p=O.OOl) in the normal eyes. 2) The correlation coefficient between Goldmann and Topcon tonometer was 0.8651 (p=0.0001) in the ocular hypertensive or open angle glaucoma eyes. 3) The correlation coefficient between Goldmann and Topcon tonometer was 0.6987 (p=0.000l) in the low lOP eyes. 4) The correlation coefficient between Goldmann and Topcon tonometer was 0.6829 (p=0.0001) in the high myopic eyes. As above, a new-contact tonometer (Model CT-20, Japan) made by Topcon Company was relatively accurate in measuring not only the intraocular pressure of normal eyes but that of ocular hypertensive, low IOP and high myopic eyes.

ABSTRACT

In order to evaluate the effects of the postoperative astigmatism control, we compared 20 eyes measuring astigmatism at the end of operation with the Zeiss surgical keratometer and then had received loosening or tightening of sutures(keratometer group), with 20 eyes that were operated without the keratometer(control group). The mean cylindrical power of the keratometer group was lower than the control group at early postoperative period(P<0.001), but there was no statistical difference between both group at one or two months after operation. However the amount of cylinder was smaller in the keratometer group than in the control group. 19 of 20 eyes(95%) had less than 2D of astigmatism in the keratometer group, but in the control group 15 of 20 eyes(75%) had less than 2D of astigmatism at postoperative 60 days. 4 cases of posterior capsule rupture as intraoperative complication occured in the keratometer group. The posterior capsule rupture was caused by the decrease of surgical field clarity due to farther working distance by 17.5cm through attaching the Zeiss surgical keratometer to the operating microscope. From this study, Zeiss surgical keratometer seems to useful to reduce the early postoperative astigmatism but the intraoperative difficulty because of occupying space and decreasing clarity of surgical field is observed. The posterior capsule rupture as intraoperative complication occurs more frequently due to the disadvantages of this instrument.

ABSTRACT

We retrospectively evaluated traumatic wound dehiscence in 13 aphakic and pseudophakic patients from Jan. 1980 to Mar. 1990. The results are as follows: 1. The most common cause of wound disruption was trauma by hand and finger(53.8%). 2. The interval between cataract surgery and trauma was almost within 4 weeks(76.9%). 3. Iris prolapse occurred in 11 patients, and one patient had just wound dehiscence. In severely injured patients, iris and vitreous prolapse, IOL protrusion and posterior capsule rupture were encountered. 4. Best-corrected postoperative vision of 0.6 or better was achieved in 9 of 13 patients at postoperative 2 months and in 10 of 13 patients at postoperative 6 months. 5. Postoperative astigmatism within +/- 2.00D was noted in 9 of 13 patients at postoperative 2 months and in 11 of 13 patients at postoperative 6 months. 6. The causes of postoperative poor vision were cystoid macular edema(1 patient) and anterior proliferative vitreoretinopathy with tractional retinal detachment(1 patient). 7. The percentage of endothelial cell loss was 20.2% at postoperative 2 months.

ABSTRACT

We studied the effect of MS-15, a new ophthalmic non steroidal antiinflammatory agent (Indomethacin), on reducing pupillary constriction during cataract surgery. Prior to surgery 0.5% of ibuprofen lysinate or a placebo was instilled 7 times and the surgeon's normal regimen of mydriatics and cycloplegics was used. MS(R) 15(0.5% ibuprofen lysinate) was far more effective than the placebo in maintaining dilated pupil during the cataract surgery. The change of the pupillary diameter from the conjunctival incision to after lens cortex aspiration averaged 0.42mm in MS-15 treatment group and 0.98 mm in placebo group. ABSTRACT

Molluscum Contagiosum is a self-limited or contagious caused by a virus of the Pox virus group. It has ocular importance to examine the eyelids for Molliscum in case of conjunctivitis unresponsive to routine therapy. We had an experience of a case of Molluscum Contagiosum on the left lower eyelid. On the corresponding site of this Molluscum at the bulbar conjunctiva, the limbus, and the cornea, no follicles, epithelial keratitis nor erosions were seen. This patient was managed by simple excision of the lesion under local infiltration anesthesia. Now, we report our experience with this patient along with the review of other papers in this report.
